Why do people insist that kids and parenting is a mother's job?
That mentality went out in the 1970s.
This is the 21st Century and the norm now is that both parents are working and both share responsibility with the school run, so any notion it is discriminatory to mothers changes to working hours is absurd.
Proportionally there are far more lone parents who are female than male and even when in a partnership, a mother is more likely to disrupt her working day to undertake child duties than the father. Numerous studies have found this to be the case and anecdotally you will hear this repeated as evidence by women you know in the office.

It is not sexist to assume more women than men will be adversely affected, when it is based on an actual disparity proven through evidence all around you.

Yes you can 'break off' to collect your kids & drop them off at i.e uncle/auntie/grans etc or take them with you in your own vehicle back on your delivery, as you'll be on a 'commitment to deliver' principal!

Doubt it

The CWU clearly don't want any sort of "commit to deliver". Its one of their red lines and its not difficult to see why as it forces posties to work unpaid hours. The Union are all about having staff working all the hours that they are contracted and paid for.

Well, I'm sure you could be the first one to claim sex discrimination for men then? :chuckle

But the fact is that there are many single parents who dont have anyone to rely on. Maybe they could ask their manager to do the school run for them, put their tea on the table and maybe entertain them on the playstation whilst they get home. Managers are doing bugger all anyway

That mentality still exists today. The vast majority of people dropping and picking their kids up from school are Mothers.
The vast majority of people who work part time are Women, and the reason for that is ..............

Doubt RM really gives two hoots want the unions red lines are!

ST has already stated ' it's our company to run as we (management) like'

As for staff working all paid hours :left: minus the ghosters!

Hmmm grounds for a discrimination case as treating certain employees differently! It will be the COMS in the firing line as they are the ones demonstrating favoritism & potentially commiting fraud :whistle

Simon Thompson is finding out the hard way that he can't run the company and get everything that he wants. RM stated on national TV that they were looking at compulsory redundancies and now they have backtracked saying NO compulsory redundancies. Simon Thompson is full of sh*t

But you knew that already

There are many issue's with commit to deliver. For a start, Royal Mail are planning revisions which will mean bigger duties, there will still be lapsing, they may also expect you to start and finish later and give you analised hours which might suit someone who's par for the walk

After all that there might even be one or two ghosters that are still daft enough to think that they are still beating the system somehow....

But for the majority of us we will just tell them to f*ck off!

Hopefully, that answers your post. Its not something the Union or any of us can agree to

I really think royal mail haven't thought it through, moving mail around during both rush hours will have a catastrophic impact on productivity, its going to be chaos,in my city you can add another half hour each way in traffic as for the lorries delivering to delivery offices from mail centres that's another thing,we will be back to the older days of a 3 hour delivery, bring it on.

With later starts and working in the dark …. Where would we stand in refusing to walk down unlit driveways? Even with a torch you can’t see low lying branches, or potholes or even dogs.
Or blocks of flats where the lighting inside doesn’t work etc

And with warmer summers predicted a lot of days we may not be delivering anyway if it’s too hot. This year the manager allowed us to come in early so we could be finished by noon. That wouldn’t be possible if we don’t start until 9.

You would probably stand in the COM's office facing a disciplinary.

Maybe time for you to start supporting your union.

You ever met the rep in my office? He’s as corrupt as the Donald Trump. Only looks after a select few. I’d rather seek advice from the chuckle brothers than him.

Personally I know what I would do with the mail if I felt it was unsafe to deliver. But others may need to know where they stand.

I already started working 9.00/9.30-17.00/1730 depending on day of the week, doing a dedicated parcel route.
I have made it work for me, but I have a unique situation that mitigates some of the drawbacks. However I can confirm that the later starts/finishes does impact significantly on productivity and personal life. Just getting to work at that time of day puts you into the rush hour traffic, causing stress and delay, but its the evening commute that is the killer for me, it is just demoralising.
Another colleague who was doing the same as me since Feb last year had too much of it and found getting to and from work so stressful that he went back to the walks. (at the moment they still start at normal times)
As for productivity, If I have to deliver near a school, and I have 3 on my route, and if I go anywhere near one at about 1500 I can easily be delayed enough to cause a failure. Rush hour starts at 1600 and can also cause delays(just getting in and out of the van on a main road is difficult and dangerous.)
On occasion traffic snarl-ups can cause drastic problems too. last month, I had finished my route in time but got caught up in a gridlock situation en route to the office. I was stuck on one road for over an hour! Needless to say I had to claim OT but it was the loss of my time that I would never get back that was most frustrating.

Do you not have to work in the dark on an early start also?
