Yes, I agree. Many of the decisions have nothing to do with better working, what is good for customers, or whether the expense of various technology is actually worth the expenditure and maintenance. I mention the technology because self-service tills haven’t been the money saver for supermarkets that they thought they would be compared to the cost of the staff they replaced.

Quite a few women in my office only took the job because of the hours. The plans for my office is a 4:30 finish which basically pushes them out of the job for just having young children.

I can also see industrial tribunals coming Royal Mails way. The later finishing times adversely affect women who are parent and also the safety aspect of working in the dark.

Yes. Royal Mail actually promoted the idea of work-life balance and recruited many post women on this basis. If they then try and force them into working hours that are contrary to this, then whilst Royal Mail can refuse, they could be liable to grievances and in the case of women, sex discrimination. I believe the likelihood of the posties winning in this particular instance is quite high and I'm basing this on what my sister went through with another large employer when she wanted to change her hours because of her son who had just started primary school.

Royal Mail may argue that they need staff to work the change in hours to ensure performance/quality etc etc but the reality is as they have shown with recruiting over 11,000 agency workers is that they can quite easily get the staff to cover different shifts. Even Simon Thompson boasts about this during the strikes with pictures of clear offices!

Do we know why the shift times are being pushed back other than to allow for biscuits ordered at the stroke of midnight to be put on the regular delivery rather than LAT?

We have a do attached to mail centre in our area yet they are going 3 hours later so I’m guessing massive change in our area

Businesses are going to love getting their mail in the afternoon.

Some are already up in arms if they don't get it by 9am.

Some were paying almost £5000 to get it by 8 or 9.

Also the price of 9am specials can be £20-30 for one item.

That is not going to be happening if the postie has to go out mid-prep and deliver and return because that could take 40 minutes unless they send out a single postie doing all the 9am specials for the whole office.

RM can kiss that income goodbye.

Someone been going out with 9 o'clockers in our office for a few yrs now. Usually someone on light duties. We haven't been getting out the door before 9.30 for years.

Depends if you have to engage in the school run to pick the kids up or not...some people need to be finished by 3pm to allow that so early starts early finish...but for others an extra hour kip, dragging a long day out to 4/5pm and getting stuck in rush hour traffic might just tick the box for them.

Never really understood that argument not having kids but presumably there are two school runs a day and being as we work longer days than kids, you gotta miss one of them?

My office is going more than 2 hours later and I personally am all for it. Hope it comes in tomorrow.

6am or so is a stupidly early time to start a working day. No need for it.

Totally agree, an 8am start will be just lovely Look forward to not setting an alarm for pre 5:30am and being able to go to bed post 9pm!!! Gosh, it might even be possible to do something in the evenings like pub, gym, etc . . . hmm maybe thats pushing it.

Can't believe how many offices still start before 7.30. we haven't for about 8 years.

I’m not a parent but for most people in my office their partners share the responsibility with them - their partner takes the child to school before their 9-5 and they pick the child up at 3

Re' the later D/O start times, these have been calculated to allow late ordered parcels entering the network, processed & out to the respective D/O's in time.

From reading the valid posts from M/C posters, they have probably underestimated the actual processing time & arrival times of mails at D/O's, which would likely mean the mails arriving even later than planned!
Basically resulting in much later 'planned' actual last letter delivered times

The family friendly thing is unfortunately a bit of a red herring

Yes you can 'break off' to collect your kids & drop them off at i.e uncle/auntie/grans etc or take them with you in your own vehicle back on your delivery, as you'll be on a 'commitment to deliver' principal!

Maybe your 'young uns' could even don respective PPE & assist mummy or daddy on delivery! Resulting in maybe you all getting back home for some tea/dinner before 9pm!!

Remember they want what is best for RM, profits/shareholders.

YOU are not important! They don't care!

Personally starting later doesn’t bother me but for many in my office and in DOs it’s a huge issue.

It would also be a PR disaster for Royal Mail to be seemingly be pushing mothers out of a job.

Why do people insist that kids and parenting is a mother's job?
That mentality went out in the 1970s.
This is the 21st Century and the norm now is that both parents are working and both share responsibility with the school run, so any notion it is discriminatory to mothers changes in working hours is absurd.
