Two guys in my DO tried to make use of the strike fund through our rep but to no avail. Needless to say the union letting them down in their time of need had them both back at work on Fri/Sat! Sad to see but I fully support them both!

This needs to be made a bigger deal tbh, where is that money going? i have not heard of anyone being able to access it and i have heard horrible things like you must show them bank statements to prove you are struggling. How is there not uproar about this? Relying on the public for the strike fund backfire? Not enough donations to it? i wish they say something. There was no answer when he called it apparently and I’m not sure if he’s heard anything since.
Iv told him not to give up contacting them as they are probably busy right now but I’m not sure if he’s still trying.

WTF are you going on about. THERE IS NO STRIKE FUND! 100 000 Posties go on Strike RM stops approx £100 per day for each Striker ... Do the sums... that's a lot of money. No way could the CWU afford to pay that out as "Strike Pay"

What does exist is a "Hardship Fund" which can be accessed by contacting your Local Union Branch Office (details on the CWU notice board normally) If you have asked your Rep and he hasn't told you that then TBH he's at the best ill informed and at the worst bloody useless.

And what's so "Horrible" about having to produce a Bank Statement to prove your struggling? I would have thought that was the minimum requirement. My local branch secretarty has recieved several applications for access to The Hardship Fund, and he's sent out a form to each applicant with a list of questions to answer. He never recieved any back, so what's that tell you?

It is pure incompetence 'you want access to the funds we begged the public for after you have paid years and years of union subs? Then show us your bank statements and we will sift through your life and see if you are down and broke enough to access our money'

From what I gather, you can’t just walk into a food bank and use it. You are referred by either the DWP or the Tax Credit section of HMRC (or your doctor) and you have vouchers to use each week you need it. So your income and bank contents are assessed to determine whether you need the service.

Otherwise the system would be abused.

I have a friend who has had to use a food bank. She was very reluctant to do this and feels total shame in it. She had to go to the Dr's to get a voucher. She's allowed to use it once every 2 weeks... I think. She doesn't get that much, I don't think, I've never asked her. I try to help her out also, when I can. I had a real argument with two people, I know, over this issue, as the are of the belief people just abuse these services, same with the school meal vouchers. I had to point out to them, the additional £200 they got towards their fuel bills, each, they spent on led lighting for their kitchen, and a dishwasher. I am not, for one moment, suggesting it should be stopped. I just want to illustrate the point of endlessly going on about people abusing systems, it's futile. It happens across the board, through all generations, and in every system. For the most part it's not even realised. As long as the measures are hitting the people who need it, that is what is important. I can't help but think the shame and embarrassment of having to go to the Dr's, only added to my friends problems and mental state. All for what, so a handful of people don't go to a food bank who don't need to. I'm skeptical this even happens, it's not M&S. Anyways, sorry for the slightly long-winded and a little off topic post. I feel very strongly about it tho. When you see a the anguish of someone who's dear to you, it's hard not to feel that way. I hope you all had a good Christmas. Peace and love.

Give your bloody head a wobble!! Why should people need to show bank statements to prove they need help? We have lost a substantial amount of money over the past 12 weeks while on strike - at a time when all of our bills, food & fuel were going up in price and Christmas was on the horizon. If someone is asking for help from a 'Hardship fund' it's because they need help during these HARD times!! Do you ever think for a second how hard it would be to NEED to ask your rep to help you seek out funds only to be told you need to prove you have no money? Prove you can't heat your home or feed your family?

We're all struggling, some far more than others... if ppl ask for help, give them the f**king help or don't expect them to support the inevitable next ballot!!!
