I posted a letter 12/12 1st class signed for post, postage bought from the RM website 11/12. It said it had to be posted by 18/12.
Obviously it was posted well before the deadline but my question is at what point in the process is the posting date checked? My anxiety is, is that with the delays it won't get scanned in time? What happens then if the system thinks it was posted after the deadline i.e after the label expires?
It was posted in a post-box so no proof of posting.
Also what happens if it arrives when the office is closed between Christmas and New Year and no-one's there to sign for it?
It's a document that needs to get there soon and I don't want it to time out.
Many thanks.

I don't think they time out, they are "cancelled" when accepted and then processed as normal.
(cancelled in RM means the service paid for has been processed/accepted)
If the office is closed then depending on the arrangements made by the firm in the office, their mail will be held in the Delivery Office until a certain date and delivery will start again. All items that arrived in the Delivery Office should be delivered on that day.
If they have not arranged for the mail to be held then a card will be left for everything that can't be delivered and the firm will either rearrange delivery or collect it themselves.

Re: 1st class signed for letter post timing out
Thank you. Can I ask what the significance of the "post by" date is on the label? Does the date get checked when the mail is scanned into the system and if the date has gone because of the delays what happens? The letter was put into the post via a postbox rather than being scanned by a post office on receipt so it's first scan presumably would have been at a mail centre?

That's the expiry date. IIRC it has to be handed in by 1159pm on that date. If its there is no problem, even if it expires when its in the system you still beat the expiry date so it should be delivered.
The machines that process the mail can read the square barcode. I think they can tell if it made it into the system before the expiry date.
On collection from a Post Box, most DOs do them and I think they scan as they sort it to the MC.
