Postal strikes set to continue after union rejects ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ proposal from Royal Mail

POSTIES across Britain declared no confidence in Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson today as they prepare for more strike action over pay and working conditions later this week.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) told the Morning Star that every meeting of workers it had organised unanimously supported the informal motion and condemned the way the privatised company is being managed.

The move came after the union rejected a “take-it-or-leave-it” proposal from senior managers.

The CWU national postal executive said it has made proposals to help resolve the increasingly bitter dispute, including an improved 18-month pay deal, a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies and a joint review of agreements and the relationship between the union and Royal Mail Group.

The firm’s workers, who first walked out in August, are set for more strikes tomorrow and Friday ahead of further industrial action next month, including on Christmas Eve.

A CWU spokesperson said: “Britain’s postal workers are hard-working, decent people — every day, they go the extra mile in keeping our country connected and safe.

“They don’t deserve to have their pay smashed, their conditions ripped up and their lives wrecked by Simon Thompson, who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

“It’s time Royal Mail understands that a few men at the top aren’t worth more than the loyalty of 115,000 workers.”

A company spokesman accused the union of making “several false and misleading claims about the detail of what we were proposing and launching personal attacks.

“We don’t believe this is the way to conduct serious negotiations.”

The spokesman confirmed that the business is still considering the union’s latest proposals.

Thats not a no strings pay deal ,and we all want to finish early not just people with kids,lets not split the working hours and workforce,one for all and all for one,reject it immediately,i look after an elderly parent and need to finish early too,so we all finish early or none of us do.

I thought the days of finishing early had long gone? At least in our office they have. A couple of business walks finish time is 1pm but town duties are 2.30-3.15 depending on day and rurals an hr later. That's if you work to time. Mostly people are finishing between 3 and 5pm regularly if they finish duty.

We was,will,never or have been given a inflation related pay rise. A wage rise is always welcome with it a must, must be that its backdated,but is that the deal breaker. Each and everyone has to face facts that we work in different times and the good 'ole days are a distant memory. We need i think rightly or wrongly our T & Cs are as if not more important long term, than a wage rise. We gain nothing but a few quid yet lose everything is something im sure the Union wont endorse. Long term job security is whats important. Any deal will come at a price it always has and we like always will still get shafted. But we keep our t&cs and we will survive.

As for "tech" they don't offer their customers anything more than RM already do for delivery options

Was wondering this myself. If so I'm in the market for a kid, preferably toilet trained. Seriously though I have no dependent children but I don't want to be out there until dark o'clock.

The later working is the worst part of it for me and what makes it even worse is they want to allow people who pick up their kids from school to be able to start earlier and finish earlier....

That's simply not fair on everyone else. So you can go and enjoy your afternoon if you have kids? The rest of us have to work until what, 6pm? work in the dark, cold and then drive home in rush hour!!!!


No to later working!!!!
