Why are you desperate to turn Royal Mail into an "efficient and profitable parcels company"?

The UK already has more than enough of those.

Well its either that or no job at all if you want your precious USO ''service'' to be preserved in it's current form.

We're regulated like a postal service, because we are a postal service.

The minimum requirements of the USO, are locked in by law. If those are to change, it's the regulators job to give that recommendation (and they haven't). They periodically review this, to ensure the financial sustainability of the USO.

Unfortunately for Royal Mail, that's just what you have to deliver if you are the Universal Service Provider. Whether or not it would be more profitable just to ignore that obligation.

I'm sure nobody here thinks that 6 days letters will continue indefinitely. But it's not Royal Mail's call, no matter who runs it or owns it.

Couldn't royal mail just give the license back to the government and let them source another uso provider ?

What's bizarre is that you think that ditching the USO and rebranding the business as a "parcel company" is somehow the golden ticket to becoming efficient and profitable.

The parcel market is oversubscribed by leaner, fitter and more ruthless sharks than we can ever hope to be. We survive in this market primarily because our letters business offsets the cost of delivering parcels. Letters on their own are loss making, parcels on their own are loss making, together you only have one set of overheads.

A standalone Royal Mail parcel business will get eaten alive unless it closes three quarters of its estate and staff and
immediately moves all its remaining staff onto the kind of terms and conditions its rivals have.

That's your efficient and profitable business model.

Surely Royal Mail’s biggest selling point is it’s posties and the fact they can also do collect their parcels from the local depot.

As you say you put Royal Mail up against DPD, Evri ect on just parcels and Royal Mail doesn’t last very long.

I remember at one point they were championing having your parcels delivered with the letters.

Ofcom is answerable to Parliament and funded by the companies they regulate,this is the model of Russia,China and most countries ,the wealthy are all in it together.

If RM have no stick to the USO - no questions asked - the rules don't change - then they have to employ the workforce to do it. If they are going under because it's losing them money then they should just pass the letter business back to the government and RM can run their little parcel company paying owner drivers £0.50 per parcel delivered. I'll be going to work for the publicly run national mail service, thanks.

Ofcom shouldn't be turning a blind eye to 10,000 job losses. We have had no floats for 2 years = 1 day a week people aren't getting their post when they are supposed to - it's delayed. Royal Mail have no respect for the USO.

But what's the alternative a nationalised RM paid for by the Government who already need to find £60B from taxes this week, or just let the USO completely die as I doubt the likes of Amazon or DPD will have any interest in delivering letters?

Let's be honest when do any of us worry if a letter is a day or 3 late arriving when everything important is now sent via email.
