The CWU wont be agreeing to reducing the USO to 5 days a week right now ( needs government to do that anyway )

It's not part of the remit of the CWU to agree to a change in the USO.
They have a voice like us all and can make some noise but they don't have a veto... but yes it does need a (surprisingly small) change of legislation which with the wind behind you could be done in a couple of days.

Thankfully the government is busy with its own shitshow right now.

I thought to change the minimum requirements of the USO, OFCOM had to conduct a review, and then give their recommendations to the cabinet minister in charge of OFCOM. I also thought last time they did that, they stuck with the 6 days letter service.

Seems to be locked in till 2027. Unless another review is called. OFCOM's remit is to protect the sustainability of the postal service. They think the status quo should stay in place till 2027.

Delivering barely profitable letters to every address 6 days a week at massive cost which also impacts on the standard of service RM could otherwise offer with the parcel side of the business is an innovative plan is it?

I'm sure you remember that the O in USO is for obligation. That's an obligation to all the people, businesses and services of this country. An obligation! The one condition that the business model should be built around. Everything else the entirety of IDS/RM do is secondary to this. So yeah...precious.

We're regulated like a postal service, because we are a postal service.

The minimum requirements of the USO, are locked in by law. If those are to change, it's the regulators job to give that recommendation (and they haven't). They periodically review this, to ensure the financial sustainability of the USO.

Unfortunately for Royal Mail, that's just what you have to deliver if you are the Universal Service Provider. Whether or not it would be more profitable just to ignore that obligation.

I'm sure nobody here thinks that 6 days letters will continue indefinitely. But it's not Royal Mail's call, no matter who runs it or owns it.
