If Simon Thompson was hoping that Liz Truss would stick to her promises to swiftly introduce anti-strike legislation which would let RM off the hook for Christmas, then today is a very bad day for him.

I doubt that trade unions will be at the top of the new leaders "to do" list. In fact, the new PM may consider that a spell of prolonged industrial action and the subsequent disruption may help to turn voters against the Labour party before any general election.

Morally there should obviously now be an election. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with a second prime minister in a row with no mandate from the British public.
