Hate to say it but Thompson has achieved everything he set out to do, all changes implemented by EA, he has he union split in two, he appears to have backed them into a corner with the threats of stopping senior reps paid release and stopping subs coming direct out of our wages (both of which are magically now not happening) and before anyone defends this by saying it’s self preservation, the unions role is to protect and fight for its members rights not their personal interests. As hated as he may be, well played mr Thompson, mission accomplished
If correct this definitely needs looking into.

It’s a CWU that now has zero power or influence anymore, which is as good as getting rid of them.
How would the last 12 months have gone if there was no union?
Pretty much what we ended up with in this agreement.

Who’s going to look into it ? Royal Mail are happy with the outcome and the union certainly won’t be investigating themselves.

6 shortish absences in 3 years can get you dismissed. In an intensely physical job.
In the past 20 years I have seen 2 people dismissed under the Attendance Procedure (1 reinstated on appeal)
It is hardly draconian.

What is on the table is less than it was, but it is far from being the destruction of our terms.
Which company for you has the gold star for sick policy?
"Don't worry, your rep will get you off your stage 3". Not good enough.

No modern company has a policy whereby 6 short (i.e. self-cert) absences in 3 years can get you dismissed. With full agreement of the Union ffs!

I'm not counting backwards places like Amazon or the gig economy. Unless that's what the CWU aspires to?

And can the CWU explain why it was necessary to agree this in order to save Royal Mail from administration? Maybe they have just become completely detached from the harsh realities faced by the shop floor, so they didn't think it was important?
Neither are there virtually any companies where you can take 6 months off a year fully paid, either. Virtually none, I'd have thought. Swings and roundabouts.

It's not taking 6 months off a year, it's called being sick.
And yes every company I have worked for had this same policy .

Don't get me wrong there are a few piss takers who include sick leave as part of annual leave.
Including many managers I know

He will be remembered for destroying a well respected company and reducing it to a low paid workforce with no respect for management and no pride in there job anymore ,
A lot of good staff have left and more will be leaving soon ,

They will soon be employing only the useless and the desperate ,
any good people coming into the job will soon leave again once they see how badly staff are treated ,
Expect a very high turnover of staff which itself is costly and makes no business sense .

All in the pursuit of sheer greed for himself and fellow managers , they have no decency , no respect , no sense of fairness .

I would rather be a decent person than have all the money Thompson has .
I am planning to work here until I retire and there are plenty more of me and we are neither useless nor desperate.

Yeah and no his job is done it wouldn’t surprise me if he leaves soon or steps down. Both parties will then pretend to build trust back up with a new CEO but nothing will change.
Ive said it(sang it) before and i will sing it again......#meet the new boss,....same as the old bos# :Very Happy........but alas...we probably WILL get fooled again!!

Thompson wins:

He couldn't lose: They all get that pay off and bonuses regardless. It's part of accepting the job.

Look at Moya Greene destroyed mail services worldwide and bedecked with honours and pearls.

So we have therefore concluded the system needs to change.

You shouldn’t be allowed to become CEO of a company to run the service into the ground and make the lives of hundreds of thousands of workers a misery… then get away scot free with a golden handshake.

Oh but wait - we are governed by the tories who are anti union…. It all makes sense now!

Some sort of revolution is needed or we will just keep doing this over and over until everything gets stripped to the bone.

RM and the CWU should have discussed how the bizarre, haphazard method of booking annual leave causes people to take time off sick. Plenty in my DO call in sick for the week before/after their annual leave as they couldn't get 2 weeks off consecutively but still booked a 10-14 day family holiday. You can say "shouldn't have booked it then" but you can also say that in a normal company, getting a couple of weeks off together at a convenient time isn't like pulling teeth from a tiger

Thompson's an imbecile. A front. But a front which not only served his purpose but pushed through everything RM required whilst detaching the workforce from the CWU. So if an imbecile is able to do that to a supposedly respected union, then those at the head of that union are simply not fit for purpose.

Thompson will soon get his golden handshake, Ward and Co will still earn their 100k+salary whilst the great unwashed will be breaking their necks falling over garden gnomes in the pitch black depths of winter. Vote No.
