"Delivered to PO Box by Northern Ireland MC" – inbound item from India, never received

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can explain a tracking status. I'm the recipient of an international item sent from India to a UK address.

Tracking history:

07 Sep – Item Received, LANGLEY HWDC
07 Sep – Item has left our International Processing Centre, LANGLEY HWDC
09 Sep, 03:24 – Delivered to PO Box by Northern Ireland MC

Nothing since. Royal Mail's page shows the item as "Delivered" with the message that it was delivered to my PO Box.

The delivery address is a street address of a parcel forwarding company in Belfast, not a PO Box. They've confirmed in writing that nothing arrived for me and that they've had no card, letter or notice about it. It's now been three weeks.

I've read older threads here where "Delivered to PO Box by NRC" was explained as an internal status meaning the item has reached the National Returns Centre. My scan says Northern Ireland MC rather than NRC, so I'm not sure whether it's the same thing.

Could anyone tell me:

1. What does "Delivered to PO Box by Northern Ireland MC" actually mean for an inbound international item?
2. Would this indicate the item is at the National Returns Centre in Belfast?
3. What are the usual reasons an item ends up there, and what happens to it next?
4. Is there any way to check whether it's been returned to sender?

I called customer services but only reached the automated service, which advised that for items posted abroad the enquiry has to go through the origin country's postal operator. I've written to India Post as well, but I'd like to understand what the status actually means.

Two questions that would be useful in answering your questions:

Is your address in Northern Ireland?
Is your address a PO Box?

Please don’t post your address on here!

The main reasons why parcels might end up at the NRC are:

RM can’t get it to the intended address (label fell off; packaging damaged; address not recognised or nonsensical).
The contents contravene the Dangerous Goods Act, e.g. contains perfume or incorrectly packed batteries.

On the latter point, laws are pretty much the same around the world, so India Post should have stopped the item. But mistakes do happen.

Thanks, that's helpful. Yes, the address is in Belfast. It isn't a PO Box — it's a street address with a suite number, at a parcel forwarding company. I've since checked and both the address I entered with the sender and the one the forwarder gave me match exactly, including the suite number and company name.
One thought on your first point: it's a suite in a multi-occupancy building, so if the printed label lost the suite number or company name it might not have been identifiable. I asked the sender for a copy of the shipping label and they said they don't retain them, so I can't verify what was actually printed.
On contents: it was medication, in tablet form, small quantity for personal use. No batteries, liquids, aerosols or perfume. Would tablets alone be enough to route an item to NRC?

Medication - there are very strict rules for international post and Medications

Controlled drugs should not be sent through ordinary international mail.

Non-controlled prescription medicines may be restricted or refused, depending on the medicine and destination.

Medicines should remain in their original labelled packaging, with accurate customs declarations; they must not be disguised as vitamins, gifts or another product.

You could have fallen foul of any of these points, and NRC may be investigating the legal status of the medication and whether it can be accepted or not. Of course, not forgetting that India is renowned for online scams.
