Hello - Thank you in advance for your help with my situation.
I recently had my passport sent to me using pre-purchased special delivery (which I had mailed along with my visa application to the embassy for returning). I was not home on the day it was to be delievered and the postman instead left it with a neighbour (which I understand is against regulations). The neighbour it was left with was a 96-year-old woman who did not recall it being left with her. This led to a back-and-forth with the Royal Mail, where the postman was adament that the neighbour had it but the neighbour was adament she did not. I eventually persuaded the neighbour to allow me to look around her house, where I dug through two weeks' worth of rubbish in her bins. Luckily, it was found, although covered in goo and very smelly.
This has been a really stressful situation that occured because the postman failed to follow the regulations for Special Delivery post and gave the parcel to my neighbour. I am wondering, though, if it is worth making a complaint about this experience or if I am eligible for any sort of compensation (considering the item has now been found)?

Yes, you should be able to claim at least the cost of the Special Delivery service as the delivery standards were not met. If you also have secondary cover (costs more) you may be able to claim for any other costs.
The postie themselves will already have had their ear bent so no further action will be taken in that regard.
