Looking for some advice..

Hi all,

I'm hoping you experts on here will be able give some insight on to what you think is happening in my scenario.

I moved into a new property last Wednesday. It’s a new build block of 2 flats but is unusual as it is down an alleyway. The alleyway is a cut through between two roads and lots of properties back gardens back on to it but ours (and the other flat, who haven’t moved in yet) is the only one facing the alleyway.

Before I left my old flat, I registered the address with Royal Mail and it now appears on the postcode finder (though it doesn’t show on the map). I then set up mail redirection from the old flat to the new one and Royal Mail confirms it was successful.

Since then, I have not received any post – I appreciate it has only been since Wednesday but I know that I should have received numerous letters (including my mortgage document!) – I also believe I should have received a letter confirming the mail redirection?

I’m not sure where to turn, when I call Royal Mail they say that the address is set up so should be fine, I am tempted to go to the delivery office but I’m not sure they can help me, it also doesn’t help that I don’t have any proof of address (the documents are all in the letters I’ve been expecting!). I work full time otherwise I’d hang around in the morning waiting for the postman to arrive on the surrounding streets!

Has anyone experienced this or know the best way to resolve it?

Many thanks

This is exactly what you should do, with a hand-drawn map.

The posties themselves don't get informed about new addresses or new builds in any official way, and if yours is down an alley they rarely go down its no suprise its been missed.

Go to the caller's office and explain the situation, hopefully, it will sort it out.

Thanks for the advice - I'll do that tonight - as an extra question - what would they do with the post they had received for me between last Wednesday and now - will they have it there or does it immediately get returned to sender?

Thanks
Jen

For addresses that don't exist (I have one house that gets mail, but was knocked down 15 years ago) then they should be returned immediately.

For addresses that have access problems, it's usually kept for at least a few days.

My guess is that they have Returned them to the sender already so it might be worth contacting anyone you were expecting mail from.

Also as technically the redirection has failed, I would also give them a call and complain, it may help the situation and in some cases, they extend the redirection as a gesture of goodwill.
