...When it comes to customs?

I'm sorry, i just don't believe that Royal Mail have no control over the time it takes to process a parcel and then have the cheek to charge a fee on top of the VAT!

Customs are a law enforcement agency. You might as well ask why the Police aren't accountable to Royal Mail, because it's the same thing. But with the added complication that HMRC are also one of Royal Mail's biggest customers.

But they're in the same building, so surely the manager's can say 'look the backlog is becoming ridiculous, hurry yourselves up' or something to that effect

Hi, I understand your frustration.

But remember we are dealing with customs and excise who not only protect our borders but have duties to make sure everything in and out the country is monitored. Royal Mail telling "them" to merely just hurry up is as good as you trying to tell them. Customs do not care about the commercial aspect of our business nor any other business for that matter. they are there to make sure nothing illegal is entering or exiting and any due taxes are being paid etc to say Royal Mail is unaccountable is just naive. Shall we send Tony over to find your parcel and hurry it through the thousands waiting in line?

The problem lies within the customs efficiency, now we are all too aware the cuts to businesses nationally so maybe a good start is to log a complaint to HM revenue and help build a picture for whose in charge over there, so remedial action can be taken to help combat the back log of items in customs.

You might not believe it, however, its true. Royal Mail are told what to do by HMRC not the other way round.

By way of comparison here are the admīn fees for custom charges

Royal Mail £8
ParcelForce £13.50
UPS £15.00
FedEx £12.00 minimum
