Q1) Does Special Delivery insure the value of my items?
a) If I were to send valuable (non-cash/jewellery) items, such as a passport, using "Special Delivery Guaranteed (by 1pm)", and subsequently my items were lost in the post (however that might happen), would RoyalMail pay me to replace the passport? (A UK passport costs about 72.50GBP to replace). Another example would be a letter with a stamp from a GP, which costs about 50-70 £ to obtain.
b) And how do I inform Royal Mail of the value of the item, so that there is no dispute afterward?

1a. No you have to purchase the extra insurance for consequential loss.

1b. You keep the evidence (receipt from the doctor, bill from the passport office etc) and the tear off receipt which is on the Special Delivery Envelope and produce them if you need to make a claim.consequential loss cover for tax returns or documents that if late, could result in penalties.

The op would get the cost of his passport replacement covered as the standard insurance, consequential loss insurance covers the follow on costs incurred due to losing the item not the replacement of the item itself,TrueBlueTerrier wrote:1a. consequential loss cover for tax returns or documents that if late, could result in penalties.
so if he lost his passport:
then royal mail would pay for its replacement under the normal insurance
and then if he had the consequential loss insurance would pay for missing his holiday due to the loss of the passport

Re: "Special Delivery". What does it mean?
Whilst those old-type Special Delivery envelopes are still in use, newer ones don't have a tear-off bit. The details of what cover you bought will be on the Horizon receipt produced by the Post Office, or on the posting book etc.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:1b. So Consequential Loss would be a good idea when someone sends me £2,000 cash to put on a horse I know will win at 100 to 1.zx135 wrote:The op would get the cost of his passport replacement covered as the standard insurance, consequential loss insurance covers the follow on costs incurred due to losing the item not the replacement of the item itself,TrueBlueTerrier wrote:1a.
