Help determining customs fees.

Post by LucasLCC »

Hi All,

I'm thinking of making a purchase from the States in the next couple of weeks, and know that the amount would be enough to attract VAT, duty and handling. Before I make the purchase, I would like to know how much of a fee I would attract, so was wondering if anyone would be able to help.

The product is Fountain Pen Inks, and is valued at $625 (apx £400).

Postage for the item (USPS Express) is $132.60 (apx £85).

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Lucas,

Had a parcel of £400 the other day and they was charged £118.62 + £8 royal mail handling fee. I believe you can pay in advance read more at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I believe the shipping cost is included in the value sometimes.

Finding the customs duty amounts in the TARIC database is a real pain. This is the closest I can find on a quick search - http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dd ... ngDescr=en. You can phone HMRC to get advice on what the correct commodity code and thus what the rate of import duty should be - details at http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort ... ROD_008658
