Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail

At present there is no such thing as compulaory redundancy at Royal Mail. Instead, those who fail the periodic "assessment centres" whereby they essentially have to re-apply for their jobs, are allowed to remain on full pay until they find a new job. So, essentially, they are still employed, they just don't have to do any work! In Chesterfield, where RMG has a major administrative office, there is someone earning £53,000 per year in the IT department, who, due to the above policy, has not done any work for the company since 2003. In order to become profitable and competitive, Royal Mail must be allowed to make people redundant and then stop paying them!
Why the contribution is important
I assume that this situation is due to some kind of deal between the CWU or Unite and the company, but it is frankly preventing RMG from becoming a commercial organisation. It's unfair to customers and the many hardworking employees of the company that such a situation can be allowed to continue.

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
There are a lot of long serving posties who would jump at the chance of being given Redundancy but it seems that RMs policy is to try and kill us off first by giving us unreasonable workloads. Has no one ever questioned before why this individaul working in IT is STILL being paid. WHAT A FARCE.

Id take it tomorow
and did nobody notice the post below?
Gosh if the above is true those who set up this system and those who have continued to support it and defend it are not only due a head check - they should themselves be removed from their castles of power.
Similarly, employees of Royal Mail should sign a contract that requires them to deliver mail whatever the weather. Remember that documentary showing post men helping themselves to money sent in cards and refusing to deliver mail in the snow - weed all of this out

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
Think that this may apply at the moment to management,
We were told by a Union Rep that Managers taking EVR is virtualy non existant,
Roayl Mail has been aware for some time that they are grossly over staffed where management are concerned, what with all the Office closures that have happened and the ones that are planned for the future, some Offices have 5-6 Managers on £50k doing nothing all day.
Cronyism is rife, in certain Areas where Area Managers have been exagerating the abilities of lower rank Managers who are all to eager to yes sir no sir to their Lord & Master.

I doubt very much whether this is true and, if it is, you may wonder why the company doesn't a) offer the person concerned voluntary redundancy or b) use the person to fill one of the many vacancies which appear to exist in this department.

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
All these extra managers do is stand around and pick on postmen, it's become a competition as to who can nab a postie for the smallest of misdemanors, it's a joke and when there is any real work or decision making to do they all run off and sit in the office and laugh at each others cr@p jokes.
I'm really looking forward to this day of reckoning. There's way to many managers in Royal mail.
Most managers have no skills at all. It's the old Royal mail saying, managers become managers because they can't hack being a postman.

There are no vacancies and managers will not take VR because they know damn well they could never get a job as cushy and well paid as at the post office.ronnie6 wrote:I doubt very much whether this is true and, if it is, you may wonder why the company doesn't a) offer the person concerned voluntary redundancy or b) use the person to fill one of the many vacancies which appear to exist in this department.

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
I don't think you read my post. The original post mentioned a manager from the IT department. It's unlikely that you would be in the IT department without a skill of some sort (albeit a technical one) and you certainly won't be standing around picking on postmen. As to vacancies, I am reliably informed that this particular department is carrying many vacancies and also employing many contractors. I also suspect, if the story is true, that a VR offer has not been made as it probably doesn't cost in thus leading to the alleged impasse. Seven years without doing any work at all is a very long time and I feel sure the business would have pursued a number of avenues to resolve this.La Poste wrote:All these extra managers do is stand around and pick on postmen, it's become a competition as to who can nab a postie for the smallest of misdemanors, it's a joke and when there is any real work or decision making to do they all run off and sit in the office and laugh at each others cr@p jokes.

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
Why don't they just stick these surplus managers back in a Blue Shirt. It might change the attitudes of some of our Managers, if they thought there was a risk of that happening!

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
I'd take Osborne's Government site with a very large pinch of salt , at best - it's a hobby horse site , at the worst it's a nutter magnet beyond parody . Probably quite deliberate too ? . It seems like the Condemns are trying to soften people up for the old three card trick ? .
Re Royal Mail being too top heavy with managers and Crozier creating an extra two layers of management - the problem with these nutter magnets is that bad ideas drive out good ones . TBH I do think that poster is a RM Senior or Middle Manager looking for brownie points as they lay it on too thick , it smacks of a Privatisation Agenda - i.e. the staff are all in the wrong and everything is the union's fault ......well of course it is !
& RM's Senior management are beyond reproach

Create a website where the entire population of the UK can make absurd suggestions on how the Government can save money. Allow easy access and registration so that users can create multiple accounts to vote on their own suggestions. As hundreds of thousands of citizens will be sat on their computer, they will not be a drain on resources outside their own homes such as roads, police, oxygen etc. Saving money. "
This is a single issue newsletter asking for your urgent help in getting a government website closed down. The site, set up by the treasury to allow people to suggest ways to cut government spending, is full of hate-filled racist and disablist suggestions, including the sterilisation of benefits claimants, the return of the workhouse and the forced repatriation of asylum seekers and migrants. Some of the site’s content is so extreme it may even constitute a criminal offence.
THIS IS A FORWARDED ON NEWSLETTER
The Spending Challenge website at
http://spendingchallenge.hm-treasury.gov.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
was set up on Friday by the coalition government and features an introduction and video on its home page by chancellor George Osborne.
In his video Osborne tells visitors that “Your government needs you, please get in touch” and the introduction assures visitors that:
“A team has been put together right at the heart of government and their job is to make sure that your ideas and comments are taken seriously - and that the best ideas are taken forward as part of the Spending Review.”
Yet these ideas and comments clearly demonstrate how the demonisation of claimants by successive governments has succeeded in promoting open and widespread hatred. One suggestion is to “Re-open the workhouses” for the unemployed, the elderly and asylum seekers. The poster goes on to suggest that:
“To prevent the problem of generations of poor people, release could be conditional on getting sterilised.”
Another idea entitled “Discouraging those who do not work from starting a family” goes on to say that:
“Where NHS staff have identified that a couple or single mother isn't in a position to support themselves and a child financially, they should be advised to terminate the pregnancy (if very early on), or be recommended to give the child up for adoption.”
Other ideas include:
“Benefits claimants to work in sweatshops” which urges the government to also send the unemployed to Afghanistan as cannon fodder;
“Let The Disabled Community Forge A New Industry” which suggests that disabled claimants should grow and sell cannabis for a living;
“Employ Crocodiles in Benefits Offices” to discourage claims;
the self-explanatory “Stop paying JSA etc to drunks, druggies & wastrels”; and
“Stop handing out free laptops and internet connections to the unemployed” in which the poster goes on to say that “I worked fifteen years before I could afford to buy myself a laptop, some toerag who's never worked a day in his life gets it courtesy of the State.”
Even where the initial post appears to be an attempt at humour or irony, the baying mob of supportive posters demonstrates that many others take the ideas seriously.
Equally disturbing and possibly criminal are the huge number of racist rants being published by the treasury.
In one suggestion “Move immigrants in council houses out of cities”, the original poster wants the coalition government to “Tell immigrants that they are being moved to less expensive areas. If they don't want to, they can leave the country.”
However, in a subsequent comment, another poster responds with “I'm not sure that I want to see immigrants living in our villages - keep them in the ghetto's until such time as they can all be deported.”
Many of the suggestions target specific groups such as Somalis and the site is littered with the most ugly and examples of ignorance and prejudice, many so extreme that we are not prepared to reproduce them,
The Public Order Act 1986 makes it an offence to publish material which is likely to stir up racial hatred. Benefits and Work believes that this is exactly the effect that the treasury website will have. The content may also be in breach of discrimination and harassment legislation. Whilst we do not have the legal knowledge to pursue this matter further, and don’t want to be accused of a publicity stunt, we hope that there are readers of this newsletter who will have both the knowledge and the sense of outrage to do so and that they will involve the police in investigating this site.
The site has a ‘Report to the moderator’ feature, but appears to be otherwise unmoderated. To leave the responsibility for policing a government website to members of the public instead of checking each submission before publishing it is, at best, inexcusably negligent and, at worst, criminally irresponsible. There are, in any case, so many vile sentiments being posted there, that it would be a full-time job to keep reporting them all.
If you are as revolted as we are by the use of taxpayers money to encourage racism and hatred of claimants, please consider doing the following:
Contact your MP today and ask them to tell the chancellor to close down this vile site, clean it up and don’t reopen it until it is properly policed;

Re: Compulsory redundancy at Royal Mail
The truth of the matter is that there is a surfeit of Managers. And as someone quite rightly said, they have become accustomed to the good life without doing any work - most units could run quite comfortably without the management structure IF the right manning levels were maintained. Most managers spend their time trying to get people to cover duties either lapsed or simply not assigned because there isn't enough staff.
Look at the number of "planners" who are quite senior managers doing a job totally devoid of any concern BECAUSE they aren't directly involved with the implementation of the process - merely chattering away ten to the dozen for a couple of days to others who also aren't going to be involved in the implementation.
These Managers aren't going to leave of their own accord, they are too well paid, too under-worked, too under qualified to earn anything like the money they earn at RM. Look how many have gone down with stress when they are now being asked to actually perform.
