Postman 'binned' Christmas gift

Royal Mail has paid out compensation to a Leicestershire woman whose camcorder was taken away as rubbish when a postman left it in her bin.

Rachel Rogers from Rothley found a note saying the item was in the bin, but unfortunately it had already been emptied when she arrived home.

Royal Mail apologised and said a cheque was in the post but Ms Rogers said it had taken six weeks to resolve.

Ms Rogers ordered the camera online before Christmas as a present.

"I ordered the camcorder online for a Christmas present back in December, but when I came home on 17 December I had 'a while you were out' card through my front door saying the parcel had been left in the black rubbish bin," she said.

She said by this time the bin was completely empty as it was collection day.

Royal Mail said: "We would like to apologise to Ms Rogers for the correct delivery procedures not being carried out when an attempt was made to delivery a package to her prior to Christmas."

"A 'form left' card should have been posted through the door informing her that the package had been returned to the local delivery office and listing various options available to her to retrieve it."

Ms Rogers said Royal Mail told her at first that she should claim through the internet retailer, but eventually agreed to pay her for the loss.

I don't understand why posties up and down the country are still putting their jobs at risk by not following proper procedure.

If you can't deliver the item, P739 it and return it to the office.
