Postman entered home without consent

Post by Aries91 »

So I had an unexpected parcel delivered today, I did not hear if he knocked on the front door as I was upstairs, however he chose to come around the back and into my yard / this is ok and my safe place says to leave parcels in the yard by the back gate, however, when I came down a few minutes lasted I noticed the parcel on my kitchen side, I had my back door open very slightly as my yard is enclosed and to ensure my cat could be in and out. As I was upstairs my 13 year old daughter was in the living room (headphones in) and the delivery photo shows a hit I of my full kitchen area and partial living room next door, the back door was open much wider showing he had opened it further to come in. The postman would have had to move my recycling bin which was a little behind the gate in order to walk across the yard to my back door (it’s not a small years and my back door is in the opposite side) there were plenty of safe spaces in the yard but he decided to come into my home without my consent or knowledge and leave again, I felt a little shaken up as my daughter was literally in the next room. I am just querying whether this is something that os allowed or not? Thanks in advance

It’s completely understandable that you’d feel shaken up by that. Finding someone inside your home unexpectedly is a massive shock, especially with your daughter right there in the next room.

Just to clarify the tone of this group, we’re actually an unofficial site run by workers rather than a formal customer service channel. Because of that, you’ll find a lot of people here tend to see it from the postie’s perspective—likely thinking they were being helpful by keeping the parcel safe inside rather than leaving it in the yard.

In terms of next steps, you certainly can make an official complaint, but it’s worth being aware that the internal process doesn't always lead to much. At most, the postie might get a quick word, though there's a slight risk they could get a bit petty and stop using your safe place altogether.

Your best bet for peace of mind might be to have a quick, friendly chat with your regular postie. If you explain that it gave you a real fright, they'll likely realise they overstepped and keep to the yard in the future.

Thank you so much for getting back to me, I appreciate this is for employers and I understand the point of view you have as I have thought about that also, it’s just as I had personal items like laundry with underwear in the photo with had a wide view of my kitchen area including stairs and stove area and is now uploaded onto the Royal Mail tracking service site.- I feel extremely embarrassed and notified by this, I have a large yard with so much space and is a preference on the app, there were many choices made to approach the back door such as my large bin was behind the gate as my bolt in my gate can be stiff to close shut and so I used the bin as a way to keep it closed, however this was pushed completely out of the way and then moved to the space if the yard clearing the pathways to the door. This has never happened before in all the years I have been here and have always been left in the yard for me and so I’m thinking it may be someone who maybe isn’t this usual route.. I was unable to see who the post person was as they left it there and left and I didn’t hear anything, and it felt very upsetting to keep thinking myself and my daughter were sat in the house at the same tome as a stranger taking a photo inside my kitchen. I really do appreciate the advice and of course understand the position yourselves would be in to make giving advice in this situation difficult. I will speak to the post office and hopefully my photo can be taken down and hopefully this won’t happen again.
