In regards to surcharges

Hi there, I have a query in regards to surcharges.

From what I can understand, a surcharge is typically applied to an item whereby the item is declared incorrectly and therefore due to the cost of handling, the surcharge is implemented to claim back the loss.

So the person due to receive the item will be the ones who will have to pay the surcharge in order to acquire the item regardless of whether it's an individual or a company. Is that correct?

A surcharge is levied when there is insufficient postage.
The recipient has to pay it if they want the item, They can try and claim it back from the sender.
If it becomes apparent that a sender is continually underpaying postage (hoping stuff will get through unnoticed) then other departments get involved.

Thank you for the rapid response. Much appreciated. My other query is if said surcharge exceeds the retention period and is then sent to the national return centre, would royal mail go out of their way to return the item to the sender if a return address is located within the item e.g letter.

In most cases they would return the item to sender if they can. However there is no time scale as to how long this will take to happen. Unpaid for returns are at the very bottom of the list when it comes to processing them.
