How is that then?
A duty that I finish by 12.30, but the regular can't seem to finish until gone 3, albeit a lot older than me.
But how exactly does 'the regular' get paid 3 hours more than you? What time does your duty finish?

People moaning about lapsing, some unwilling to finish their own duty or booking ridiculous amounts of OT for a duty we know can be done in good time, others walking at a snails pace round our streets, or door stepping, signing for items to save time, etc etc. all these things are people's way of 'beating the managers' or knocking off as early as possible. Unfortunately they are the same things that make our customers go elsewhere and putting us into a declining state of business. Isn't it time we all did our best to save our jobs rather than adding to the already difficult climate in which our competition are laughing at us? Or is it time that the ones that don't mind a good days graft started looking at joining the other side?

krussel wrote:Although this post is quite provocative to cause an argument by accusing posties of not working hard enough it does raise the real concern of TNT delivering their own contracts by 2017.

I think the real reason that such are large proportion of our mail bag is TNT dsa is down to the fact that it is US delivering it cheaper than we are allowed to charge for ourselves. We also offer a dependable reliable 6 day per week service which the public (despite moaning) trust. TNT do not yet have this structure to sell.

The question is should we “risk it” and refuse to handle TNT mail and see how long their contracts stick with them before coming running to us. The longer that we allow these leaches like TNT to ride on our backs the stronger they become.

This is the moot point. I don't have faith in Ofcom, a 'jobs-for-the-boys' Quango staffed mainly by retired public sector workers who have little knowledge of logistics and economics. Yet their decision is crucial, far more so than the OP's flaming. Ofcom are under political influence and will toe the line and make 'competition' expected by the E-USSR the main factor in their decision, despite the USO and despite the fact that the competition is inherently unfair.
So, it will probably come down to US to make the decision, as you infer. They can be forced to allow competition by the bullies in Bruxelles, they can be compelled as a company by the incompetents at Ofcom to carry on as now effectively subsidizing a rival business. If it comes down to US to make the decision not to handle access mail, we should do it wisely. As there is an agreement not to refuse it, as a union we should 'cherry pick' THEIR mail, and only deliver to densely populated areas (like they do and will expand into further) and tell 'em to invest in their own infrastructure to deliver the rural stuff. Of course the colossal cost of this would make that impossible, even if someone was daft enough to lend them the money to do so. The sheer inefficiency of rural route duplication would have them howling in despair to anyone who'd listen. Then we can point out the same thing regarding the profitable areas.
So yes, ultimately I believe WE are the only people who can act freely on this issue and save RM and the USO for future generations. You can't trust the E-USSR, can't rely on the government and certainly not on the old plods' club Ofcom.

Ofcom aren't a legal entity, they're an industry regulatory body, they could fine us (we don't have to pay) and petition Government to remove our USO status or even our postal license (both very unlikely) but they could also fine TNT or remove their license for "cherry picking" and that doesn't seem to worry them at all.

You do know who funds the postal department at OFCOM don't you?
So Ofcom can require RM (as the USO provider) to provide access to our network and can fine us if we do not comply. Leaving aside the niceties of the precise legal position of this arrangement and questions over the exact consequences of failing to meet the Ofcom requirements, in all practical interpretations it means that we don't have the option of telling Ofcom, TNT etc to "do one". Suggesting that our CEO has the choice but elects not to take it would be disingenuous but I suspect that the person that posed the original question has gone away with exactly that impression.

Aside from ensuring provision of a USO, Ofcom clearly has an agenda of promoting competition in postal services. It has acknowledged that it sees downstream access as a means of providing a foothold for Royal Mail's competitors to develop fully competitive end-to-end delivery services. To that it extent it must be delighted with the way things are progressing and I can't see why it would want to fine TNT for doing exactly what Ofcom hoped it would do.

And yes I know how Ofcom is funded - so what?

Just wait till you managers are part time since most ( not all ) of you do sweet FA after we all leave the building.

'Patroling' being your lapsing equivalent.

I'm not asking the company to get rid of older employees, I'm saying, now we are private, it won't be long until we are deemed either 'up to the job' or not. And unfortunately looking around me at work, many are not. No other company would put up with the attitude and lack of any enthusiasm and poor work rate as RM does. It's staggering, if you've worked elsewhere, that it is allowed to go on to be honest!

If you didn't want a slagging match you may have been better off refraining from criticising all your colleagues in your original post! :speak to the hand

As far as "No other company would put up with the attitude and lack of any enthusiasm and poor work rate as RM does." What planet are you from?????? I have worked in many places before RM and for the majority people worked for the money not for the fun of it! Leave your little bubble for a while and go speak to people in the real world. Go see people working in Sainsbury's, Tesco or McDonalds etc Ask them about their enthusiasm for their jobs! For a vast majority of low level workers
they are paid for their time, enthusiasm is reserved for the lucky few who have good jobs or fat salaries. The work rate for many postal workers is reasonable in a majority of cases, at least from what I have seen. Perhaps your office is full of work shy layabouts and you are just such a super star they can't keep up with you? Little bit of news for you, employers like team players, if you think a cull is coming watch your own back before worrying about others! :speak to the hand
I'm sorry but working at mcdonalds for minimum rate is hardly comparable with earning £10 an hours at RM. for a starter, however s**t the service is and the fact you regularly get served cold food, people WILL continue to go there because to be honest the food tastes good. The only reason RM pay such good wages is because of the strength of the union and the fact that they had no competition for such a long time. Now we have competition, the mentality will have to change at some point. If one person can do the job to a good standard and cost less than another, it's simple maths to see who you would employ if you were the owner of the business.

Trust me, it won't be long until RM will start using people's work rate to decide who deserves a job, rather than how long they have 'worked their bollocks off' for. (Or not in many peoples case)

Do you know what happens when people aren't scared of losing their job? When the pay is so poor that ye don't give a toss? Bad stuff happens. Royal Mail know this.

Oh and if it comes down to work rate then say bye bye to 90% of management. It took two of them to be out in their car the other day to give some people a few so called missorts. Why is that?

Maybe you are right but if you are one thing is for sure, many managers will be part time soon. Many are the biggest wage thiefs in RM.
