gj1023 wrote:Well this has been a lively post. I think the bottom line is along the lines of what someone posted early. That is the right skills for the job you are doing , in Royal Mail one of the most important skills, is the ability to read English as the job invovles a lot of reading. It is totaly irrelevant what colour or nationallity you are.

On the PC bit, blantant racism is obvious to all and not acceptable to any normal minded person as we have moved on from the views of the fifties and sixties etc. The problem to me is percieved racism , the way people are been indoctrinated with this PC rubbish . It seems to make them so sensitive , as if they are looking for racism , where there is none, There has been a few examples in this thread and I think this sad as "freedom of speach" is the bedrock of our society.
Well said!!Going back to my childhood in the fifties, the foreigners amongst us took no exception to being called after the land of their birth etc, even if we got the exact location of their birthplace wrong. no offence was meant or taken when you said you were going to------the greeks or eyeties or poles or whatever. In fact they rather enjoyed their almost 'special' recongnition!

On the Dispatches prog last night it was interesting to hear a black guy bemoan the fact that there were some Indian lads in his office who couldnt speak or read English.......

Does that make him racist?

or is that reserved for if a white fella says it (in CAPITALS)

or was it a valid point?

Good now most of you have calmed down a bit.
First creedscat - the problem with going on about the Iraqi in your office is one of relevance.
Why don't you tell us about his hair colour is or his inside leg? Because they are not relevant. If he is incompetent he is incompetent. as someone else mentioned when talking about a Scottish person in their office, is his nationality relevant? The answer is no. If you feel the need to tell us about his nationality to insinuate all Iraqis are incompetent then it is imho racist.
Next stokes11eg - is it acceptable to call all people from the Asian sub-continent a paki.Even if they are Sri Lankan or Indian or perhaps Egyptian aren't they all pakis?
Again the answer is no. Most of us do not think it is rather jolly when people don't quite get our birthplace correct. It is racist Which leads us onto....
gj - in your world there is blatant racism and percieved racism and nothing in between? Most racism is insidious. That is why the BNP can put out an election leaflet that is perfectly legal and why my line manager says we have to deliver it. Do I f**k is my response. Racism is usually insidious not blatant. I would rather be guilty of sometimes seeing racism where it isn't than ignoring the numerous occasions where it is.
It seems the wheel has swung full circle and being deemed politically correct is an insult. Me - I am proud to be an anti-racist, proud to be an anti-facist.
And no-one else appeared to want to answer the question that someone else asked - how many white posters ?
For the record I regard myself as a second generation half-caste immigrant. (half-caste isn't very PC :shhhhh ).When I fill in forms I put my nationality as European wog.
Perhaps us non-whites (non-white is a political term here as my skin is actually white) should just shut up and let you, the white masters decide what is and isn't racist.
O.K boss?

Try engaging your brain before pushing buttons on your laptop, think before you post in other words!!!
You have made yourself look rather stupid with some of your recent posts and this one is no exception. I could'nt care less if he was BLACK/WHITE/BLUE OR f***ing INDIGO, if you cant do the job you should either be properly trained/educated or f****d off SIMPLES!!!!! what part of that do you find hard to grasp???
The topic started off from people being unable to do thier jobs PROPERLY due to very little english etc, and suprise, suprise it happens to be foreign nationals, not all the time but a majority of the time, now i stated we have an iraqi BLOKE at our place who cannot do the job properly and is excused of certain elements to his job because of his bad english, now is this ok in your eyes that someone who is paid the same as you, is excused to do less than you because he cannot speak english or read the english language???????????...............Infact dont bother answering that as i know what your post.

Give me strength :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

iraqi BLOKE
You mate are well out of order, what relevance does it have that hes iraqi and a bloke, try describing the individual in a better way which is not so descriptive, i mean what is the relevence of the individual being a man? An iraqi woman could in theory be just as incompetent.

Dont you just love the PC gestapo

Look, this has been blown way out of proportion.

I do feel that the quote below just about sums it up.

Does that make him racist?

or is that reserved for if a white fella says it (in CAPITALS)

Only if nationality/gender are relevant to the post.
Otherwise it's just "tagging" designed to provoke a reaction in the reader. :hmmmm
You just don't get it creedscat.

IPS why do you feel the need to describe someone by nationality when it has no relevance?. :hmmmm

I think what we have is a total misunderstanding. Yes the nationality was an emotive part, some more emotive than others obviously.

What the poster has said, many times, was that to do the job you need to be able to speak and read English. Obviously this is correct. The nationality I believe was used because many firms fear discrimination laws if they target a minority race and so some people may feel agreeved if the same rules do not apply to them. Many firms are forced to employ staff because of their race, rather than their skills to fill quotas and tick boxes. This is undeniable - its what many people call positive discrimination.

Fishtank.

"I know this Iraqi bloke who cannot read English let alone speak English"

Ok, lets start censoring and leave out his nationality

"I know this bloke who cannot read English let alone speak English"

And the sex of the 'person'

"I know someone who cannot read English let alone speak English"

This would then clear up the sex/nationality of the person but then is it racist to use 'English' if Iraqi is not acceptable What has the posters nationality got to do with this?

"I know someone who cannot read or speak"

Hmm, but are there not disability laws that covers this? This now sounds like a disability!

"I know someone"

Settled....... That's how stupid it can get.
