Well, I took a bunch of tracked parcels back today, that ordinarily I would have "unofficially" safe placed.

Not a single "in flight" safe place request, and I don't think any of my tracked parcels had a "Safe Place" on the label.

Problem is, most people don't bother to navigate Royal Mail's website to bother with the inflight, and many retailers don't integrate well enough with RM, to enable safe place options during checkout.

So this will be a problem.

If everything is really going to be photographed well it's not going to be very popular amongst the customer, yes I know it's the sender who is a paying customer but those receiving items may get and in fact some will get fed up and will try to avoid Royal Mail. Also it's gonna be interesting. They want to increase efficiency but at the same amount of redeliveries will shot up. We will have to handle same items multiple times and the callers office may be in for a shock. I can see these angry customers queueing and one poor bloke in CSP trying his best to bust the queue. I almost forgot it will almost certainly cost royal mail money as they will face a choice pay OT or deal with the cut offs. This may well be an end to ghost OT and this will definitely cripple offices across the country.

Surely the recipient pays the postage not the sender, either by the added P&P when buying or it's factored into the item price and sent 'Freepost'.

But "safeplace" should only be used if stated on the label or shown on an inflight request - and when you consider it is safe etc

In that case, they need to lockout the safe place option on items that haven't received a safe place designation or inflight request.

If someone denies receipt do RM send someone round to see what colour the carpet/doormat is? Serious question as it proves nothing. Who is to say it wasn't pulled back out of the letterbox?

All this to compete with other companies who dump a packet on the doorstep and take a photo, often without even knocking, and then walk off.

Well no, but the GPS coordinates along with the photographic evidence of the door being open are surely enough to prove that delivery was made, no?

You don't think GPS coordinates will be tagged in the meta-data of each photo?

Don't overthink this, people.

Just carry on doing what you've always done.

Take a picture of any old blurry s**t.

You'll only get pulled up on it if there's a denial of receipt, and then you just shrug and say "dunno what happened with that photo,".

And if you get a few denial of receipt complaints, you don't think they will be able to look back at other photos taken by same PDA user and decide that you haven't been following correct procedure. You are literally handing them the evidence to give you your P45.

Anyone had problem taking the photos in the pouring rain today, with soaking wet pda in one hand bundle of wet soggy mail in the other, water dripping off your cap and a soaking bag over your shoulder? My pda kept freezing. Had to tun off and turn on to take picture, then repeat when trying to post multiple items at same address

A photograph of a item on the doorstep proves nothing. It can be just as easy to take the item away again after snap.

The customers door has to be open when you take the photo

What if you don't go to the door, and hand it to them at the gate , is a pic of their hand ok? If not I'll have to give them the PDA to take to their door and take a pic and bring back to me, as I never go into this place due to dogs, they always come out to me.

No. THe recipient pays the retailer to send the item, the retailer chooses who to pay to deliver the item so the retailer is the customer

Customers don't want to be hassled with a photo upon delivery. It's just plain awkward setting the parcels down in an open doorway, then taking a photo, all while the customer is standing right there probably thinking what a load of s**t this is, just give me my parcel!!

I've just been taking pics of the parcel with the closed front door and it's number. I know it's not the correct procedure but quite frankly, with all the other s**t that goes on in my office, I don't care. I know my customers and I know who wants a packet/parcel left behind their plant pot on the front doorstep and who doesn't.

They don't want to be hassled with signing for items either.
Should we just make up our own rules about that as well?

This whole thread is embarrassing. It is full of people moaning about having to do their job properly.
If it is going to cause so many problems people will quickly learn how to add instructions to their parcels and navigate the inflight options.
