We have to scan any tracked or specials that we don't deliver back into the system when we get back, once thats done they're off our hands.

That type of system will only be used in the busier offices as it's too expensive to roll out into every office.

Think that was the general idea for everyone at one point.
However, as with most things in RM it wasn't thought through..........still need someone to put the items away and what if you scan an item as returned and nobody can find it when the customer turns in?

Plenty of variations on methods involved, but unless the tracking numbers are recorded on the 739 it all falls down on a regular basis as it always will with the untracked items.
