Any way you look at it, there is not going to be a general strike as in the past. Will there be a finite period for this strike or will it just die the death of thousands returning to work over a protracted period and who is going to negotiate the million and one causes. There have been recessions in the past, the three day week, electricty cut off for several hours a day, the miners strike calling out for national support............................it's not by chance there hasn't been a general strike since 1926. That was 85 years ago and since then the power of the unions and the membership has fallen dramatically.

When our pension was cut and when we had to work longer the CWU didn't rally the troops and the most probable reason was because they could see that it wasn't financially viable. Change has to come, not quite as quickly as the coalition suggest perhaps, but change it must, even the CWU as small as it is has a pensions defecit.

The argument about people living longer is true, but it has little to do with increase costs in pensions. If a person retires at 65 his/her part of the pension pot will never be exhausted however long he/she lives. This is because the pension pots are invested in low risk investment funds such as Government Gilts, Corporate Bonds and Cash Deposits. The average annual return on these is sufficient to meet the annual pension the recipient receives. When the recipient dies, his/her fund does not get passed on to the next of kin, apart from there may be a reduced pension paid to a spouse/common law. The remaining fund remains with the provider and reinforces the pension pots of people remaining in the fund. It does not give them a better pension but makes the funds more secure.

Yes and the issues will not be solved by negotiations with RM either cos they're not interested
You really think there'll be a general strike over Royal Mail issues
Of course striking will do f**k all because our CWU is very weak!!! RM will have our pants down, grease us up and aim for penetration....I was just stating what we should do and if we did we would win but as i said before the union is weak and crap at negotiating. Best we all sit back and watch it fall apart, take the money and run....
CUT OFF!!!

There are no alternatives. Such opportunities have long since passed and most industries have already been through what the Royal Mail is now facing. But simply saying "we'll strike" with no idea of what you actually want and no chance of a result other than less money and even more of the country supporting the sell off really IS blunt chisel territory.

Since you obviously consider yourself a sharp tool...what alternative would you suggest?
Doing nowt?
Get the kettle on...we'll have a long.hard think at this one. :cuppa

...but doing nowt isn't without consequences NT.
It sends out the message to both the Government and employer that the "blunt chisels" will accept anything, any attack and simply roll over.
That,in turn must surely also lead to less money and poorer terms and conditions.
What to do....?
Stand up and take a kicking or lie down and take a kicking. :whistle

So...what do you suggest scoobs?
It's OK for old NT...he's sitting back on his deckchair, retired and supping an ale.
What about us?...what do we do?...just accept it,move on and brace for the next kicking?

I could give em a list...Reading some of the posts on here .... A lot of members trying to buck the system in terms of avoiding working and asking stoooooopid questions...Can I be sacked if I am slow...Should I be sacked cos I have not delivered the mail..... Should I get a Stage 3 because I have only been at work for a week in the last 3 years...Good grief....The more people go the more secure my job becomes...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
