"No other jobs let you do the school run"
True, hence a whole bunch of people taking this one that was advertised as family friendly. It's bad enough that the general public think of us as doing half days without other posties joining in
"If someone is allowed to do different hours just because they have kids it's unfair"
Yep. So is the antiquated notion of "seniority" trumping ability, but everyone in RM accepts it even when it's detrimental to the company as a whole ("well Ian who is due 6 months off for an operation and has never done the walk has decided it looks easy so you're getting moved and we will just ignore it when he can't do it and then goes off for months.")... So is the fact that someone who's worked under 5 years is on worse terms and conditions, and less contracted hours than someone who's worked for 8. Nothing in RM is "fair," and as a reserve who's done almost all of the walks in our DO that is very, very apparent
Kinda have to agree on this point. As much as people want to say, "well they've put in the years so they deserve it and it stops favouritism," it pretty much works against the company on wanting pure flexibility from it's workers which is obviously what they've been wanting for years.
The problem is that yes they've been there for years however they are very limited compared to a reserve since they will more than likely only know one walk in the office which would be the one they signed for. Hence why most people don't really stick around as much now since they don't know what their days off are until management either says "oh, not sure yet. Umm do you want to work it?" or literally turns around to you and says, "oh it's tomorrow or bank holiday ". People hate being messed around like that.
And, despite the belief that seniority stops managers playing favourites, it's still a really flawed system. It's pretty big issue in my office as well since majority of the ones that have the highest seniority still have the "job and finish" mentality so will do things such as come in early for an hour or will doorstep or run around. Then, when it comes to the resign, all that will happen will be they'll hop on another walk and repeat the cycle again and again.
There are a few youngsters that will do the same too, but they've obviously learnt it from somewhere. It's somewhat of a benefit to us and a curse to us and the company long term. Kinda feel like the company is over reliant on the senior members of staff more than anything, but what exactly happens once they have left or no longer playing ball? Not even trained a single member of new staff how to do IPS or mail sorting for YEARS now and you've got quite a number of old timers that can leaving now in this year alone. But, hell with that point might not even be an issue if things go as RM has planned. However, probably fall on their faces a number of times for them to get it right.
