They've changed their approach to non-drivers with a sneaky little threat.

Where there is insufficient work for non-drivers on a Sunday they could do more Saturdays with the Sunday’s which they have been allocated passed to other colleagues who drive and they consequently do fewer Saturdays.

Although that's only gonna fly while we're still delivering letters on a Saturday.

In my opinion compulsory sundays is likely to be one of the first things Royal Mail concedes during the negotiations.

It's legally dubious anyway, there are many genuine reasons staff could legitimately opt out and looking at their numbers I'm not even convinced it's necessary. Our office could probably cover those numbers with volunteers and new starts recruited to work sunday.

I think what they really want is to remove Sunday premium rate, they would probably trade the compulsory part for that.

Just an opinion though.

I reckon annualised hours will be first to go. It's obviously such a push designed to provoke. Unworkable anyway with an increasingly casualised workforce. There'll probably be some messy fudge with slightly different duty patterns for summer and winter, but that's about it.

Then Sunday working will go. Largely unecessary like you say.

I think they won't budge much on later start times tho. And "Si" seems obsessed with sick pay, so there might be some sort of trade off there.

I work with someone who can drive but doesn’t for Royalmail, (don’t get me started), I can see drivers be shafted again, surely if you can drive and have a licence you should be made to drive for Royalmail.

If you applied for a driving job fair enough unless you have a medical reason then you should be driving , if you didn't also fair enough.

What a strange comment, if you were employed by RM and it's part of your contract to drive fair enough but there are plenty of us who started in the dark ages using bikes, and it wasn't a condition of employment to be able to drive. I can drive and do outside of RM but I wasn't employed as a driver and have no intention of driving for the company, if you were employed at a time when it was part of your contract to drive then get on with it

You can't make people who weren't employed as drivers drive just because they have a driving licence for the same reason you can't make people who weren't employed as HGV drivers drive an artic just because they have an HGV licence.

Yep correct, us old codgers never had to drive when we first started obviously now they wont employ non drivers.

Why do you drive?

There was nothing forcing anyone who was employed pre 2012 to drive - those who did decide to become drivers chose to do so when park and loop/shared vans came in

And for those employed after that, when it was in their contracts, they chose to accept a job that stipulated they must drive

So how exactly can you have a problem with people employed on a contract which didnt have any mention of driving on it, not driving? Its not their fault you either chose to, or signed a contract knowing you would be employed in a job with potential driving duties.

Royal Mail moved the goalposts and changed the job - not those who cant, or dont want to, drive for Royal Mail.

I dont drive due to i have always gambled none drivers will do monday - friday for the last 10 years, maybe next year.

Can someone with a bit more knowledge on the subject clear this up? That pretty much sounds like those of us fortunate not to have Sunday working in our contract can simply opt out of any future Sunday working, and RM are admitting so in their response to the question.
