I don't know if you've noticed but there's a bit of a spanner in the works at the moment and the rule book has been thrown out the window.
Irrelevant, the holiday slots will have already been paid for by the summer lapsing. You'll just take your lapsing out first then cut-off your own walk if need be

You cant deliver what there is no time to do. Failing a walk to deliver part of another is just robing Peter to pay Paul. When it's busy its always the lapsing that gets pulled and offered up as overtime.

How would that help with opening up holiday slots?
It would be completely against existing agreements, completely against RM policy and a case of reps completely ignoring resourcing guidelines.

Where does the budget for the extra leave slots come from then? :cuppa

I think we're way beyond looking at budgets for this year :left:
Where do you think the budget for the excess sick absence is coming from?
Where do you think the budget for self-isolation is coming from?
Where do you think the budget for social distancing, people working from home, mileage for private vehicles etc, etc.

We're working under contingency measures, budgets that were set 6 months ago are just pieces of scrap paper now.

Irrelevant. It doesn't change that there's only a certain number of duty hours, the same number of vans (the only difference for that is double the amount of fuel used).

If were working under contingency measures, why isn't RM using casuals in DOs starting and ending out on delivery? Are you willing to volunteer all staff at your DO to do compulsory overtime if we're under contingency measures? :cuppa

Look SP I don't know why you have to be so aggressive.

The bottom line is budget is a fixed cost for annual leave no matter when it's taken. You have X number of employees and they have Y number of weeks to take, it doesn't make any difference when they take them.

The only thing that changes in the summer is the amount of base line resource you have available due to extra slots being opened up.

At the moment the base line resource is so screwed by sick absence and social distancing measures that a couple of extra annual leave slots are not going to make much difference.

What management may do during the summer period if they're struggling for resource is offer annual leave deferment. People might go for that if they can't get away anywhere.

Annual leave is not a fixed cost per shift. Each shift has x hours worth of work and y hours of staff. You get hours taken out for sick and leave. Apart from xmas pressure we're never guaranteed either casuals or ot in, no matter how busy it is

That's not how an office budget works.
Both annual leave and sick absence are separate from the core budget.

When savings are made they are taken from the core budget not the two stand alone budgets.

Both the annual leave and the sick absence budget are affected by a reduction in core hours but the percentage allocation does not normally change.

Having attended hundreds of resource meetings and worked on countless revisions I do know what I'm talking about.

Things must work differently in DOs. Savings are also made against annual leave. They're near enough always lapsed, no matter what type of duty

People can't finish their own walks at the moment so good luck with that.
Summer lapsing will come in, it pays for there being extra leave slots in the summer
We haven't done summer lapsing for 2 years now, lat time they tried it everyone slowed down and cut off their own duties

Royal Mail could have furloughed all those shielding but didn't , that could have saved them some money.
As a benefit those shielding wouldn't have eaten up any sick absence.
