It now costs RM less to deliver a letter, than it did before Competition. But the quality of service now, is a sad joke, compared to what it was, just 10 years ago. You call that progress?!?!?
I don't call it anything. Like TBT (above) I put "--" around "competition" to emphasise it's thier word not mine.

Not me Pickaname did but you did seem to miss it in your reply perhaps Andy did the same. However, I would be interested to know what "Modernisation" has meant in a Mail Centre - from both posties and technical staff as all I have heard is that various machines and techniques have changed but have heard no personal views.

One thing I am certain is that at my DO we see more Crash Sorting when MC is under pressure. The last missort run from the MC seems to be growing and the Mech Bundles have a higher % of missorts than I can ever remember. Not what I would personally call progress.

Yes quality and precision went out with time and cost and what did we gain? an 8 billion pound pension deficit and a bullying management culture!. HOW BADLY CAN A COMPANY BE RUN TO RACK AND RUIN!.

i have worked in the same MC for 13 years now , i can honestly say in that time , all that has happened is that the management has added extra boxes on the LSMs with some new software and we have had the toilets re-decorated , paid for with our first-line fix money. the air-conditioning does not work and we have holes in the roof. the rain is caught by an ingenious method of using plastic sheeting, funnels and black bins. can anyone tell me if we are fully up on this modernisation lark ??

Mandy says "modernisation", RM say "modernisation" and the CWU say "modernisation". All 3 have different interpretations of what this means.
For Mandy it means, bringing us into line by reducing costs only, for RM it means buying a couple of all singing all dancing machines that won't work or be up to the job, and reducing the workforce, for the CWU it means new machines coupled with a SWW, minimal job losses, protection and a greater input into the decision making process for those who actually know the job.
For us, the frontline staff, it means nothing except more work on already stretched duties.
IMO, it should mean a more efficient way of delivering mail, not necessarily quicker, not cheaper but just efficient.
This "modernisation" bogey-man has been doing the rounds for years, but in my DO, except for the introduction of a dozen PDA's for drivers and scrapping the bikes, a postman from the 1960's wouldn't notice any change.

oh I think he would :Very Happy he would notice that he has umpteen bags of mail, thousands of packets and would have to run a car as the bikes seem to have vanished. (funny how they can afford loads of vans - supposedly- but not a bike) he would notice that he is under pressure all day and that the meaningless paperwork we now need to do the job has increased tenfold. He would also notice that the cameraderie he enjoyed has largely disappered in a "dog-eat-dog" free for all. Other than that and a few walksorted bundles - usually littered with missorts - nothing has changed as you say :mfo

You sussed it then :Very Happy I'd change the emphasis ,Mandy = reduce your pay,CWU =make no waves keep up the subs and give the careerists more say,RM it means up the bonuses of a select few ,send most of the tossers to the wall and get those make believe Qof S figures up to standard by any means fair or foul :chuckle
