I’d personally bin off anyone with this attitude “I just want to potter around with a trolley and bag of mail”

Not sure how you have come to the conclusion that " The business knew exactly how many of their workers didn't have licenses before coming up with the idea" How an earth could they possibly know? they are only now starting to get an idea by asking the Non drivers if they have a licence or not, which would suggest to me they had no idea before that or they wouldn't be asking!
I guess one way RM knew how many workers had licences could have been when, every single year, drivers have to show their license, or maybe the fact that there is a tile on the People App that specifically collects that information.

Put it this way, if you employ 10 people and 7 of them have driving licences, you know you have 7 drivers. It is a very short step to work out how many non drivers you have

And what would be your legal justification for doing so? I don’t like it would hardly sit well at an employment tribunal

RM need to upgrade the HCTs to EAV Cargos or suchlike, which carry four times as much as an HCT (280 kg vs 70kg), and leave the non-drivers on those duties. Given the extended range and payload, a lot of CDV duties could be switched over too. Problem solved.

Remember when RM trialled the e-trike? Anybody out there using them :left:

DPD, Evri, Yodel, Amazon, Asda and many, many others already use the EAV in place of vans. Whenever I visit central London I am struck by just how many of them are now in use. I for one would be keen to have a go on one!

Unlike trikes, the pedal effort is minimal, meaning there is no fatigue from heavy cycling effort, and the loadspace is much more capacious both volumetrically and in terms of payload. These things can go to places that vans can’t reach, eg pedestrianised areas, town centres etc, and are quicker than vans in congested places.

So how do they work out with your 'Method' how many staff not driving for RM have a licence, in your example above, out of the 3 non drivers 2 of them may have driving licences and choose, because it's not in their contracts not to drive, but until RM asked recently they wouldn't/ couldn't know

They had one at an adjacent DO to mine a few years ago. Seen it for about 3 months before he got hit by a bus. I assume they retired it after that because I've not seen it on the road since and AFAIK the OPG was IHRd out because of the accident.

Well if they are choosing not to drive, and never have because it wasnt a requirement when they started working for RM then it doesnt matter if they have a license or not. They are the same as those without a license. They aint driving.

The license is a red herring - Royal Mail knew how many workers drive for the business and how many workers dont or cant -they still ploughed ahead
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

I doubt whether cwu would get it to a tribunal. It’s a driving job “post person with driving” is how it’s been advertised for as long as I remember. The attitude of I’ll come into work and work how I want is why the rest of us shovel s**t.

"Post person with cycling" is the job I applied for.

Only held a provisional license, which was presented during the application and interview process as my proof of ID, nothing more.

That is not me cherry picking the work I do it's simply me continuing to uphold my end of the contract agreed between us
If my employer wants to change the terms of my employment and qualifications required to do it over a decade later that's absolutely their choice.
However their choice is is their problem, not mine.
They can pay/reimburse me for the upskill that they have decided they now require or let me go in a civilised and reasonably humane way.

The current behaviour of pulling people like me in for interrogation sessions , and creating an environment where colleagues feel empowered to point fingers and attack individuals like some sort of witch trial, is certainly not civilised.
Especially considering that many non-drivers up and down the country don't drive due to disabilities reasons that are perhaps invisible or fluctuate and the details are of no business to their colleagues, it would potentially come down to a number of legitimate discrimination based tribunal claims.

While there are certainly exceptions, most people currently being attacked by statements made in conversations like on this thread are actually working in the only way they can because they ways they/the business/their colleagues might want to work, are simply impossible or would actually be unlawful or a criminal offence.

One of these days I'm going to dig through the news articles and figure out just how many times they've tried to introduce these things. When I was doing some research recently I found an article about something like that being trialled way back in 2008. In the end it's just always more vans on the road.
The machine stops.
