NEW LIEBOUR

New Labour are Neo-Liberals , they're just more subtle and devious about it than Cameron .

Just a matter of getting people to do your dirty work for you , be it the failed Tory Freemarketers in Postcon , the swing to the right in Europe or our beloved gruesome twosome .

Problem is if Cameron got in , you'd end up with a nasty bunch of public schoolboys that want to shaft everybody , that's about the best thing you can say about New Labour .

Sorry Daz , nice try but we've been around too long .

Its so simple and the most democratic way and once done we can all concentrate our engeries on issuses far more important than CWU affilation to the Labour party.
Mount Pleasant International Branch passed the following resolution (moved by Branch Secretary) at our AGM last Sunday,
for CWU Annual Conference:

This Conference agrees tthe change of our rules to allow for the creation of two seperate political funds
one of which has contributions linked to the Labour Party and one for general political campaigning with
no link to the Labour Party.

How do you define working class in the 21st century?

To get a majority in parliment the definition would need to be fairly wide, which i suggest was the original aims of New Labour.

Do you (a)have the power to hire and fire or are you (b)subject to those who hold such power?
Do you (a)have any power to influence your conditions of employment or are you (b)subject to unelected placemen who decide these things for you?
If you become unemployed, do you (a)have a network of friends who will help you back into employment straight away, or are you (b)likely to be on the dole for an unforseeable length of time?
Do you (a)view 'Law and Order' as desirable, or do you think (b)'justice' should have a part in things?

Anyone answering (a) won't be working class.

You could also ask things like:- Am I guaranteed a hospital bed and the treatment I require as soon as possible on the NHS without having to go private?
Will my children recieve the education which will bring out their full potential within the state system?

That might hold true if it were treated as a very simplistic depth guage of the unambitious and complacent yes. I was brought up to believe that any social tags are irellevant if you have the drive to go for things in life.

They're hardly irellevant to the 97% of people who attach importance to them for one reason or another. As for the 3%, I assume they'll be the likes of Blair who told us we were "all middle-class now" back in 1998.

Why would you attach importance to being labelled working class? Cripes if we don't have enough labels and numbers attached to us without that. There is far too much 'grouping' and pigeon holing. You go for what you want i life - ask Michael Caine about that one. It might have had more meaning in the 50s but not these days - people start multi-million business from kitchen tables. You can hardly expect wealth and fortune to fall in your lap.

Being 'working class' (whatever that is) isn't a club you know. You don't get a badge and a certificate and free gifts like some social Bazooka Joe club. We all have the chance (if we choose to take it) of making something of our lives. You can get stuck in a rut, everyone can, but thats not an excuse to complain of injustice - no shortage of part-time courses where you can learn new skills or gain new qualifications. Plenty of my colleagues are talented individuals who for one reason or another choose not to make the most of them. Even if we have commitments like families, these are choices we make.

At one time the disaffiliation idea was the perennial " loony Trot " motion , well there must be a lot of loony Trots that are p***ed off with McBean & New Liebour ? these days :Very Happy : : :cuppa

The best compromise without cutting our noises off to spite our faces is to copy UNISON and do separate political campaigns , the best one was the TV commercial with the cleaner and her mate to back her up in the office and the cut into shot to the manager's coffee cup - i.e . he wanted her sacked and out of the building so he could finish it - didn't need to do any join the union sermonizing there ? - but it got round the advertising rules ?

Lets be clear before withdrawing!

lovejoy wrote:Although this may seem a dig I want to make sure anyone who withdraws from the political fund knows what they are doing.

The main issue on here seems to be that the Labour party isn't doing the business for us! I 100% AGREE WITH THAT BUT WITHDRAWING FROM THE POLITICAL LEVY ISN'T THE ANSWER.

Obviously we are all aware that the CWU gives financial support to the Labour party. The sums involved are large but they are only a small chunk of our political levies. Other things our political levies are used for at national / branch levels include

Rallies / political meetings
Financial support to all parties/organisations that support us
Costs of lobbying MPs (travel costs etc)
Campaigning right across the political spectrum
Supporting good local councillors
Political adverts - like the recent ones in national press

There are all sorts of other things / events that branches spend their political funds on in order to benefit the membership.

If you are agrieved at the Labour party then I suggest that rather than withdrawing from a fund that is used in the majority to help you, it would be better to chose another option. Maybe putting pressure on your reps and passing a motion in your branch calling for the withdrawell of all support for the Labour party would be better? Your Branch could then write to HQ, Raise the issue at National meetings and start a nationwide movement for this option.

Lets not cut off our noses to spite our faces here!
