Cheers - I have to admit that I have been on the end of both approaches but it wont surprise you when I say that I am more likely to do OT for Boss No 1 who is my boss now, rather than Boss No 2 who was only an acting boss anyway.Scottishlass wrote:I see your point TBT . The experience I have had has always been the first scenario. I'd give any manager a piece of my mind if they tried scenario 2 with me. But then that's just how I am. .
Royal Mail have never understood that. Last year when we were called, in a roundabout way, Lazy and Overpaid, AL and AC lost all the respect of the Posties that they may have had.Treat me with respect and you get respect from me

I think your way out of line Kingsmoor. If the guy has a bowel problem what the feck is going to change on a daily basis? If he's waiting for results or another doctors appointment, what more can he tell RM? If Curly wants to sit surfing the net while he's ill so what! Maybe it helps him take his mind off his problem, or should he sit feeling sorry for himself while he waits for the next heartless twat to come along and have a dig at him?kingsmoor wrote:how ever curly i hope you get better very soon.glad to see your illness isnt stopping you being sat at your computer surfing the net

The way I see it is that some managers will phone you at home and so will not. If you've got a manager that likes to score points you will be harassed with phone calls. We should accept the sick procedures under the national Agreement which is signed by the CWU and RM. Why should we accept sick policies that have not been locally agreed by the union, any decent person can see a phone call every day is inhumane. A phone call every day amounts to a breach of trust and confidence by the employer.kingsmoor wrote:border line abusive....how?
this is a post for curly who replied to my previous comment by saying he dosnt wont to be bothered by a phone call.i was pointing out that hes getting paid for nothing yet a phone call is too much.....im i wrong....if he dosnt like it there are other options for him instead of harping on a bullying....its just a buzz word that seems to carry about....someone bullied me at work id explain there error to them one way or another..but my previous comment abusive .dont think so....if your sick your sick if your long term sick not many better employers..you wouldnt get bugger all in the REAL private sector.....

I fully agree with what you are saying. My understanding was that you phoned in on the first day of your sick absence, and again when you are fit to resume and sent a sick note in if your illness is going to last longer than 7 days.mailsort6 wrote:The way I see it is that some managers will phone you at home and so will not. I don't think its unreasonable to ask the employee to phone and tell he manager how he is doing once a week and to tell them about any sick notes being sent in or any news on his progress. The problem I see is when we have managers who harass people none stop by constantly phoning the person whilst they are off sick or threatening to stop their wages for not turning up to a meeting.
Most people when they are ill, like to be left alone and I cant see what could possibly change overnight, that would warrant a manager to call everyday. A manager by the way despite some of their claims are not god like and often possess no medical skills whatsoever. If a persons condition is so serious that they require daily monitoring, then I am quite sure that person would be in hospital and the healing skills of our managers would be of no use.
This isn't the Burma railway, and what they are doing is bullying and harassing people that are ill.

That is totally against the law. What if you are down the chemists getting your medicine? What if you have the flu and the best thing is to sleep? Absolute rubbish. I would ask for this in writing, give it to the CWU and expose this idiot.barrychuckle wrote:Hi, thanks for the replies. Silly me but I forgot to say the manager also said if you don't answer the phone or are not in when they call round they will stop your pay. Surely not right.

I was an acting manager a few years ago and i seem to remember a derective from the CMA informing thier membership to tread carefully when phoning staff when sick,RM may have a policy on phoning thier staff but that does not give them an automatic right, this process of telling staff they must phone in everyday when of sick we cured our managers in one fell swoop we asked if they were going to take on the rental of the line and equiptment plus the rest of the bill to every member of staff then they could ask us to phone the response was no so we asked how they felt it was the firms right to your own personal phone number they were a little stumpt for an answer to that one.
Fact RM do not have the right to your home phone number that is covered under the right to hold information back nobody is entitled to your home number or your mobile number that is your choice to whom may or may not have that information.
RM managers have been warned about phoning people when of sick it can be considered as harrassment you only have to tell them if you are unfit for work and if you get written of by your doctor and have a tab for that then they can write to inform you of any appointments with OHS ,EHS they do not have the right to phone you,its also is a good idea to remember that no manager has any medical knowledge or qaulifications nor has the EHS, they only advise RM.
OHS may have some medical background but they are not qualified in all routes of medicine and most are retired army doctors with very limited knowledge i found this out when my husband was so ill i nearly lost him twice the OHS decided that an ex army doctor could argue with the top heart consultant in the country only RM came of worse,so dont be pushed around by managers if your ill your ill if your taking the mick then thats up to you but remember sometimes people are of ill and it is for real.

We seem to have gone off the point about my original question about the tactics used by managers while people are off sick. Having a go at each other and political alliances aren't what I was interested in. As this was my first ever post on the forum I'm quite surprised by the controversy it's caused. Mind you it has been quite amusing (hope my typing is OK). I'll post another reply in the near future to let you all know if our managers do constantly phone people off sick or go and visit them. So please let's get back onto the original subject. Barrychuckle.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
