It might be the end of the world as we know it?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

When I started this time last year they were all "fixed" until Feb 28 2022, I think it's the date the 6 month contract would end if they start hiring you now, starting sept 26.

They've done this for many years, when I started in 1998 it was a 6 month contract. It's so they can say bye bye your 6 months is up to the people who aren't much good and renew for people who are useful.
After a while they may offer a permanent contract to those they want to keep.

Is it not because it’s the last week of the financial year?

I imagine it's the seasonal push for staff, put off a few weeks for strikes.
