CUSTOMERS living on the outskirts of Peterborough can expect first class improvements to mail collection services when a new delivery office opens this year.
Royal Mail has revealed plans to open a bigger, more modern, delivery office in Orton Southgate – combining existing facilities in south Peterborough, Oundle and Stamford.
It is hoped that the new location will mean an improvement in quality of service for customers living in the PE7 postcode – in particular Whittlesey and Farcet.
The current delivery offices in Welbeck Way, Woodston, Peterborough and All Saints Place, Stamford, are owned by Royal Mail and are expected to be sold.
The Oundle office is on a leasehold, and this will not be renewed when the new Orton Southgate office, in Newcombe Way, opens in November.
Arrangements are being made to keep collection and redelivery services at Oundle and Stamford post offices, so not to cause problems to existing customers.
Royal Mail also confirmed that no Oundle, Stamford or Welbeck Way staff would lose their jobs, as it is expected they will be transfered to Orton Southgate or other regional offices.
The new Orton Southgate office will be bigger, brighter and more modern – in stark contrast to the existing offices which struggle for space and facilities for both staff and customers.
The new office will have space for greater growth potential as the surrounding area continues to develop, as well as improving
the quality of service for customers in the PE7 postcode.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Currently, deliveries for the PE7 sector area are split between Peterborough South delivery office and Peterborough main delivery office, because there isn't enough room in Peterborough South to combine them all.
"But in the new unit there will be sufficient space to combine all the PE7 deliveries together in one. This will inevitably help to improve quality of service."
"The changes are not due to come into effect until November, and staff and unions continue to be fully briefed on developments. Arrangements for keeping callers' office facilities locally are also being finalised and customers will be kept up-to-date."
There are no planned changes to the main delivery and sorting office in Papyrus Road, Werrington, Peterborough, nor are their plans to change round delivery times.
