Strength in Unity

Post by mikep »

A strong turnout on our picket line on Friday , a committed office to the cause. However we had a RM lorry turn up at the gate. The driver clearly did not want to cross the picket line. So can anybody explain to me why on the telephone a CWU union official INSTRUCTED the driver , a CWU member to cross a CWU picket line and also telling the driver that if he did not cross the picket line he would be immediately suspended on arrival back at his depot.
Did this happen anywhere else?

Perhaps he was still on shift and his period of strike action was due to start later?

This is most likely it, on our picket line we had a few lorry's going in and the drivers were near end is the shift, and their period of strike action started in the evening

Yes he was coming towards the end of his shift and due to strike on his following shift. But am I missing something here? Surely its every individuals legal right to refuse to cross a picket line while working, without the threat of suspension should they do so?

He could have refused out of fear for his personal safety then there’s nothing they could do.

Why would he fear for his personal safety.

He did nothing wrong. His strike didn't start until his shift finished. Just as the nightshift didn't either. He clearly started before 4am. Just as when we were all starting back yesterday morning, he would have been on strike.

The worry is had he not crossed and got suspended then we could end up with an unofficial strikes which would totally play into rm hands

Didn't their strike time start at 7am? We had same at our depot. Lorry turned up and dropped stuff off. I'm 99% sure there was a 3 hour difference in strike times or something like that, like a window was left open.

Think it was 4am for everyone. A good few drivers will normally already be on shift at 4am

It is obvious his shift/duty start time started before 4am
If you start before that time you have to finish your shift

One of the many bits of paper that come out mentioned not crossing pickets lines, you would be deemed to have taken strike action and your pay stopped for the whole shift. Those drivers would have been on strike friday into saturday while we were all back at work.

0400 was the cut off time. If that Driver had started his shift before 0400 he was not on strike until he'd finished. IF his shift had started after 0400 he wouldn't have turned up for work because he would have been on stike. :thumbup

Your Picket Line Supervisor should have been told this. If the Company had told those Drivers (who were not officially striking at that time) that if they refused to cross the picket line they would be suspended it puts them in a very difficult postion. :no no

Did anyone actually have any Drivers agree to not cross their picket line? :cuppa
