Vacant duty

We have a duty in our office that was created a few months ago and has been covered by reserves ever since. Can it stay this way indefinitely or does it need to go up for someone to sign for? We've had other duties come up as available in the meantime.

You do not know the reason why that duty was created (Ring Fenced?)

An example being the duty content is to cover people who are disabled, rehab, cadet duty, reasonable adjustments etc as a reason for it not to go up for signing

It’s none of that. Quite a challenging walk made up of bits from other duties that were taken off because they were too big after the revision.

So the higher ups have deemed this and a couple of others not proper duties and as such unable to be signed for at this time. Would the Union be able to help convince them otherwise?

How do you know it is not a ring fenced duty?

Management has no obligation to tell you the reason, as a person's disability is confidential. You might have an employee transferring into your office from another specifically for this duty to keep them in the job. Am not saying that is the reason, but best not jump to conclusions and speak to the office rep before jumping the gun.

Just ask, they will either tell you if it is ring fenced or not, if your office is anything like mine it probably isn't it's just that the DOM can't be bothered to do things correctly.
