To be honest I would have pushed it upstairs to my area rep (the Offender) and represented the victim after initial enquiries revealed who did what to who etc

Well my humble opinion is that much that is reportedly bullying and harassment is neither.

Managers will try to get as much work out of you as he/she can and quite within the working framework - some people who are less than productive or over sensitive (and these people do exist) perceive a hard line or implied criticism as bullying or harassment. I wonder of all the reported cases of bullying or harassment, how many are taken the distance. - not too many I'd bet.

Now to the comments made by colleagues - well I'm a bit longer in the tooth than some and the workplace has always been full of ribaldlry, innuendo and criticism. I think some take these comments too seriously and tick the harassment box in a fit of pique and some use it as an excuse for their limitations.

I would not for one moment condone true bullying or harassment but I can honestly say that there have been very few true caes of that nature throughout my working life.

But when you have banter with your work mates you need to know were to draw the line.

What happens when someone gets fed up and pissed off with all the near constant verbal crap they get? In my case some of my colleagues/mbrs are noticing the crap and are starting to say things to me about it. And thats from a group of people who throughly enjoy their banter but know that constantly going on and on and on at someone is not banter.

For the record i do not belive there is any malice involved otherwise i would make a formal complaint if asking the person to stop did not work.

The key thing when dealing with B & H and banter is to be able to tell if there is any malice involved or not. Going OTT with banter is not B&H but if malice starts to creep in then it is!

How do we deal with people who dish it out but cant take it?

Mate i read your comments and i will ask a Q 2 u... If a Manager asks a postie to do something NOT in there 318 and IR framework as in do a one man job with two of u... And then proceeds to then tell you "your lazy" and when asked to "leave me alone and pick on someone else" Then says "Oh shut up your paranoid" Would just in this instance be H&B in there comments of a personal nature and non professional???????

Bullying and harrassment are common place within Royal Mail.

Managers constantly asking you to work over (every 60 seconds until you say yes),
Constant gripes and complaints (Too slow, lazy etc - especially when other posties sit and talk all day),
Snide comments on a daily basis

I have been on the receiving end of all of this. When the DOM was notified he did nothing - I left the depot

I've already spent 6 months of my life thinking of a reason to live on a daily basis (in another job). I will not be reduced to this level again.

Don't underestimate how destructive constant bullying/harrassment can be.

Remember that it is not the intent of the comment that matters.
It is how the person perceives the comments that counts.

OK - Bdaz I take your point about knowing when to draw the line and that is the point really - when someone is asked in a nice way to pack it in and takes no notice then the line has been crossed and you shoould take appropriate action.

As far as Tommo is concerned I'm not entirely sure I understand the question - but a Manager can direct you to work outside of the 318, the comments he made aappear to be out of order and you should have reported him to your Rep.

If you have left Royal Mail then the problem for you has finished - I sincerely hope you now have a stress free working environment.

DVBUK55,, As i said before,, If you didnt understand it might be my posting,,,??? Well lets try again...

The case i mentioned went to a H&B appeal, and is still in play now.. (i wont go into it more because of this) But im glad you as a screw or ex screw
said report them to the rep which did happen and went thru all the procedures but the case was turned around and the postie got done for putting claims of H&B in BAD FAITH.. in line with the code of coduct!!! As i can only tell u these facts i understand your lack of comments thru lack of info But ive got the reaction from you and thank you for it....
