In my office we are going through the process of having walks restructured via Pegasus. I realise that nothing has been agreed yet and we can ask to Union to 'disagree' to them.
But I am a driver and a few guys have said that there will be a re-pick if the duties change. Now I have been driving for 6 years now and if there is a re-pick I think due to seniority I could lose my driving duty and end up as a reserve postman.
I have been told by others that as I have had the driving allowance for 6 years , my duty might be protected as I should not lose the driving allowance as it effectively means a drop in salary.
I have spoken to someone in another industry who is clued up on this sort of thing and she said the same thing. That the money received as a drivers allowance should be recognised as part of your take home pay after so many years.
I have been told by a DOM that under the last agreement it was noted that drivers could not be picked off of a driving duty because of the skills needed and allowances. If this is true, fine. But I feel that after 6 years of driving, it could all count for nothing under a re-pick.
Can someone clarify this for me please?

Going by what happened to me,and it was confirmed by my area rep, when we had a resign even tho i was much senior to a lot of the drivers i could not knock them off so i was not allowed to sign for a driving duty.
The only way i could get on is if some of the drivers did not pick a driving duty.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

There is no longer an allowance for driving duties. There was a right to continue to be paid as driver whilst you continued to drive providing you were in receipt of that allowance. Drivers who start a driving duty now do not receive any extra. In the event of a repick and the loss of the duty through seniority you would retain the right to the allowance for a period up to 3 years because it was not through choice. The only reason for anyone to retain the duty would be if there was a preference list prepared and certain duties were excluded for the reasons laid down.POSTMAN wrote:Going by what happened to me,and it was confirmed by my area rep, when we had a resign even tho i was much senior to a lot of the drivers i could not knock them off so i was not allowed to sign for a driving duty.

Those reasons should be used very rarely - seniority is the preferred choice of the membership and should not be abused by people trying to circumvent that system. RM would like nothing better than to be able to award duties to who they chose and not the membership.

So how come my area stopped me from picking up the driving duty? How would they of got to their decision.seniority is the preferred choice of the membership and should not be abused by people trying to circumvent that system
It was a while ago and i can't rem what they actually told me.But what could they say.
I argued that it made a mockery of seniority as junior colleagues who were on driving were allowed to stay and i missed out.

I would have a word with your union rep with a view to taking out a grievance against the manager. Seniority is seniority & if all duties are included in a re-sign then you should have been able to choose. If you fight for your rights, you should get the duty you were entitled to.POSTMAN wrote:So how come my area stopped me from picking up the driving duty? How would they of got to their decision.seniority is the preferred choice of the membership and should not be abused by people trying to circumvent that system

you might find that your area has passed a motion agreeing that driving duties during a re-sign would only be available to current drivers, it's away some area's found that they could protect drivers (usually senior men ) during SDD, as we say many times ,we are all opg's, so it might be worth checking it out and if your branch has no motion then you should use national guidelines for re-signs.
PS. if your branch has passed a motion, put a motion in yourself at the next agm and make sure you get plenty of support.
