Inquiry call as mail still missing

The Royal Mail has apologised after hundreds of postal items intended for Aldershot people were stashed by an employee.

However, those affected say they still haven’t received post despite Royal Mail insisting that the missing letters and parcels had now been despatched.

Residents of York Crescent, Green Acre and York Road became suspicious after they stopped receiving items during a three-week period from Christmas Eve.

A member of staff lost his job following the discovery of around 400 items of delayed mail in a sack at the sorting office.

The undelivered post includes a five-year-old boy’s birthday cheque and card, a Christmas present thank you letter to a grandmother and Home Office documents intended for a mother whose son died in the 1989 River Thames Marchioness boat disaster.

York Crescent resident Margaret Lockwood Croft, whose son Shaun died after the boat collided with a dredger and sank, wants an investigation into the missing mail.

Ms Lockwood Croft, who runs campaign organisation the Marchioness Action Group from her home, said: “They should give us an explanation of what has happened and a full apology.
“Our regular postman went on holiday and during that time I didn’t receive anything, not a sausage or even the usual junk mail.â€
