"A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We have detailed contingency plans in place for industrial action, which include mechanisms to prioritise items, including critical government mailings, NHS letters and medical prescriptions wherever we can.

That quote is from the below thread with RM assuring people their important NHS letters etc would get through, I think it was obviously lies as they appear to have no intention of touching the mail on strike days only tracked items and specials, unless I'm mistaken and the army of agency/non striking colleagues will be tasked with searching through the mail to find anything that fits the criteria.

Lying scumbags - they are quite happy to fail those items the rest of the time

The post doesn't actually say that they'll get delivered during the IA, further on it says
Organisations such as the NHS will also be prioritised after the strike action to ensure important letters reach their recipients as soon as possible.
and at various points it says 'as soon as possible' - so this is just a bit of PR with soundbites for the public to make it sound like important letters will
get through no matter what but actually they'll just get delivered when IA ceases.

Seems it’s existing LAT hubs only rather than the places they want to be parcel hubs under executive action.

Sounds like they want a lock out. They know full well that the larger offices/hubs will have large picket lines and that anyone from smaller offices will think twice before crossing them. Usually staff go into their own office when they know only 4 or 5 are on the line. Only my opinion but makes me wonder if they are thinking along those lines.

The LAT hubs are probably the largest offices anyway, so will have the largest picket lines

I've spoken to a few managers over the last few days and they all believe that the business does not want any existing staff attending work on strike days.

Read into that what you want.

means that they won't have to pay people who would be willing to break strike at a smaller office and sit around doing
nothing or sweeping the floor but get paid as 'Not my fault the mail didn't get through' - these won't want to cross a line
at a bigger office.

RM are spending on all the agency so want to use them and pay as few RM staff as possible to recoup
as much as they can. That's my superficial thoughts, but perhaps there's a more deeper reason as well? Let's have your
Friday night conspiracy theories (no let's not!).

I wonder if it's the same as last time where they had a fixed contract so RM decided to use them, as they still had to pay no matter which way it went

I think you're probably right.

Every DO manager I've known over the years would rather no-one attended during a strike.

It's pointless and potentially a flashpoint they would rather not have.

The problem is if someone wants to work the business can't be seen to force them into industrial action.

How do they plan on getting the parcels to the hub offices if all distribution staff are on strike? Surely not worth the bother for agency truckies.

They will have the entire distribution network available until these guys finish their shift.
Remember it's only if your shift commences after 0400 on the 26th so anyone on nights will still be working until their normal finish time.
As these drivers will not be feeding the closed offices they will have that extra resource.
They will load up the trucks with parcels and tracked and leave the letters at the mailcentres

Getting the parcels to the hubs will not be an issue.

Friday into Saturday will be a bigger distributor issue for the business.

Thanks very much for the invite Mr Yellowbelly!

Well this was all planned all along:

1. Lay on thick what they really want (annualised hours, later starts, Sundays etc) and push the union into calling a strike;

2. Use the strike days to beta test the new parcel model and close the parts of the business they don’t really want;

3. Save all the money going to the staff they don’t really want and throw it at the staff they do really want (jeans and t shirt guys);

4. Show that on these days the business actually did really well, to the point where union starts to think RM actually like these days;

5. Let the union keep calling strikes to starve the staff they don’t want;

6. Plan B if the old staff don’t just accept what RM want (highly unlikely to accept) then offer to the old staff that we won’t touch you but we want to bring new staff in on these new terms and you need your pay so why not go with it else we carry on with this parcels via jeans and t shirt model on strike days.

Additionally (I’m no expert here) but couldn’t the ‘new model’ that’s being used on strike days be used to show how this part of the business is ‘really good’ if the business was broken up and they want an example to point to how they can make lots of money through this new parcel model.

Oh and Klaus Schwab was probably involved too.
