A POSTIE faces the sack after thousands of missing letters were discovered in his house.

Kenneth McFarlane was reported to bosses after locals became suspicious about mail not being delivered.

A raid by the Royal Mail's security branch on his house uncovered around 20 sacks of letters.

Sources claimed he'd also been spotted burning mail in a field near his home in Waterloo, near Wishaw, Lanarkshire.

Married McFarlane, who is in his 20s, was suspended immediately and now faces the sack.

He could also be prosecuted over the missing mail.

Last night, a source said: "This has been going on for several months and people were getting more and more suspicious.

"Complaints that things were not being delivered were becoming more frequent.

"Fingers obviously started pointing at the local postman.

"The Royal Mail's security branch began a probe into the case which culminated in a team of investigators visiting McFarlane at his home on Thursday.

"It didn't take much to find the evidence inside the house to back up their suspicions."

It's thought the sacks of mail found in his house contained thousands of undelivered mailshots, letters and mail order items.

At the family home in Waterloo, McFarlane's dad, also Kenneth, said last night: "He only burned some of the mail because he was worried about people being the victim of identity theft."

He added: "Of course, he's sorry about what's happened - he's distraught.

"He only did it because of the pressures of work. He had twice the round of anyone else.

"He complained about it and was told he'd lose his job if he complained again.

"About 99 per cent of the stuff he didn't deliver was leaflets and not even proper letters."

But locals told the Record items including chequebooks, Christmas cards and mail order material had been among the missing post.

A Royal Mail spokesman said yesterday: "We can confirm a postman from Wishaw delivery office has been suspended as part of an investigation into intentional delay of mail.

"It is also likely that a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

"The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to us and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women."

The spokesman added: "We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience."

Postie Aaron Thomas, 2 0, was suspended in November after he dumped up to 10,000 letters in Crieff, Perthshire.

In December 2005, up to 10,000 missing letters were found by a dog walker ditched next to a burn in Lanark.

Postman Stewart Cochrane, 33, was rumbled after test letters planted in his mail bag went missing.

Is it me or are more and more of these stories about now and most of them tend to be blamed on excessive deliveries.

If you know of insecure "safe" drops then refuse to use them, make it the Managers problem to find a safe place
