Most newbies last 2-3 days in my office. One lasted the prep then got to the gates and left their trolley and went home, never to be seen again. To be fair, who the hell would want to work in this job now? There are way better jobs out there, even working for amazon is a better job than RM now, at least they have no leaflets and letters to deliver. RM blah on about how we get paid more than our so called 'rivals', but the truth is RM make us do three times more work than our 'rivals'. I would never recommend any of my friends or family to join Royal Mail now.

It has been RM plan for quite a few years now while sitting in their ivory tower
What, RM planned and manufactured staff shortages?

They do plan staff shortages to a certain extent especially during the summer.
I think they call it running lean.

Now unfortunately they are facing a recruitment and retention problem. Given the overall employment market at the moment although it wasn't planned it was probably a little short sighted to find themselves in this position.

I would agree with those who feel like this is part of a bigger plan. I mean failed deliveries including parcels and recruitment ban. This is boosted by reduced overtime being paid in some places. The recent hint at splitting the company and renaming just confirmed the plan. I am just thinking how long will it take for customers to start ditching royal mail in favour of the competitors. Every week I have a customer who openly demonstrates his discontent with royal mail services. Some say they are trying to avoid Royal Mail as much as they can. Not that long ago it was almost unheard of.

Yes - they have been doing it to a greater or lesser extent for years -

Apart from about half a dozen, we've not had any new starts on shift for many years, just staff transferring in from other offices and loads of casuals/agency

Read an interesting article recently (Office of National Statistics & People Management ). It discussed the fact that there are 250K Over 50s who are "Economically Inactive" in the workforce.

This goes some way to explain why EVERYONE is finding it hard to recruit staff. Because they're "Inactive" they don't show up as Unemployed and because they're not claiming benefits they don't show up on those figures either. One of the main reasons is people reassessing their lives over the Covid Furlough and deciding to retire early ...... wishful thinking for most of us I expect. :cuppa

Hah, that's hilarious! That'll be thanks to our wonderful management.

Some great posts here, and very sad ones.

I wrote to thirdpartyservices for reference type stuff, i got an auto reply saying they're busy and there are delays :hmmmm

It's extremely sad knowing that the people you've come to serve and go the extra mile for them (and they show great appreciation for), will be left with receiving their STAMPED mail every other day by no name postie.

True. I am a reserve and the moving from one duty to the next has got particularly bad these past couple of
months. Most days I am on a different duty, with comments from customers asking if I am their new postman, or what happened to their old postman.

A few have left my office recently. Can they even hire new staff?

Having left the company a couple of months ago firstly I wish all the current staff the terms and pay deal they deserve . I was talking to a former colleague yesterday who told me 8 people have left since my departure . Four of these postmen left after a couple of weeks in the job and the rest had long service at full time . Royal Mail are systematically destroying the job and I feel this business is only going one way unfortunately. They can’t keep staff and the most loyal are leaving in there droves. If RM get there way by introducing later starts and finishes . 1 in 7 Sundays and later Saturdays then it’s most certainly a mass exodus like no other . Sad state of affairs . A once proud company destroyed by pure and utter greed.

Having worked in several industries, this is not unique, contracts for long term employees were ALWAYS far more superior to those offered to new members (due to watering down contracts as population increases). Psychology is a great demotivator and I have experienced petty to extreme circumstance where the companies do their best to remove those with the golden contracts and higher pay rates. Even police pay has "levelled down" in recent years.

This method is far cheaper than VR, with USO looking as it is being ignored and government is backing RM, would this not be the most economic solution for the long game?

A lot of other companies seem to have now offered adequate pay rises, so there's jobs out there with fair pay. At Royal Mail we are still stuck on 2%.

RMT workers aren't even happy with an 8% pay rise and are fighting for more.

Royal Mail are so far behind. How long is it going to take for them to offer us a fair deal.

So what would you accept as a fair deal everyone is different.

Fair in my opinion is a minimum of another 9% on the 2 that we've had already. Total of 11%.
