Trapped in Calllers

Post by Stormproof »

I want to come out of my Callers duty but I think I'm in for a battle, I got the impression off my DOM that I'm stuck in there forever :arrrghhh :arrrghhh
I'm loosing too much money working up there, recently lost half of my early shift allowance and not entitled to any thing else, after working up there all day with customers moaning at you all day the last thing I want to do is docket.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

All you need to do is give your manager adequate notice that you intend to come out of the C/O, he then has the oppurtunity to advertise the position and to also get someone trained for the job.

He is not refusing, he is giving adequate notice, you should check the way forward resourcing of jobs, after all we are all one grade now so why should he be unable to put in for another duty, he would be being discriminated against, that is why it is important he gives plenty of notice.

Taken from Way of Working within the Way Forward Agreement.

7 All specialist jobs will have consistent job descriptions, which will identify the specialist capabilities and which will be standard throughout Royal Mail.
8 Employees who are regarded as suitable should be dedicated to these duties for a minimum of 12 months. If after 12 months the employee wishes to change jobs, they must give adequate notice to enable a suitable trained replacement to be found before release can be allowed. The replacement must be available to take up post no later than six months after notice has been given.

When you say you're in the C/O does that mean you're a PHG,yes i know they've gone but you know what i mean.

Cause in our C/O they're PHG's who do the reg,739's,scan this scan that and other bits, and these people are thin on the ground.
It's like, you have to be carried out in a coffin to leave that duty.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

No i'm not a PHG just an OPG. I don't do the cage duty or any scanning as the Callers Office is located in a different building away from the DO & MC, on the same site tho. I do all the other stuff serving customers, dealing with complaints, cash handling, phone calls, British Gas parts, ATOS/PO Counters/Admin visitors & obviously putting all the stuff away that the posties bring back (s**t loads of that now). There are only 2 of us that work in the C/O but on different shifts, the workload has tripled but obviously we have'nt had any extra help, thats why I want to get out of there, NO MANAGEMENT BACKUP! and your right I guess I will be carried out in a coffin.

Who covers for you and your colleague on your day off?

I've just done an hour or so in the callers this afternoon - I was just passing through! The guy looked like he'd his hands full - you know how it is when it suddenly looks like a bus has pulled up outside. The trouble with the job now is the later starts - and I've done both early and late shifts - the early shift would have packets coming back from about 11and the later shift very few. I think the callers office duty needs re-evaluating and more time put in. I made a case for a SA in the afternoon before Xmas but there's been no sign yet - except they are no longer booking packets back in the register!!!!!

Trapped in caller

Post by rogerrabbit »

Hi
Iworked in our callers office/reception at our mail centre/and DO combined, handling large amounts of cash, stock and selling a full range of services and dealing with phone calls/visitors and anything else that came through the door.
So I felt that as we are the face of RM!!?? I asked my mail centre manager to pay all staff and reserves who work in callers offices and receptions to get the commonly used leadership allowance,at least this would make up for the longer hours of dealing with crap a little more bearable (and several people who work in the key room with none of the above responsiblities get this allowance for little or no resposiblities)any way as you would expect he said no chance so I said then you can stick your reception job and put in for duty in distribution, this took some months but got there in the end.
The upshot is I think all callers/reception staff should get there area reps to put a motion into conference that this payment should be paid as a matter of urgency so that these staff would get there just rewards. :no no

As i see it they cant refuse to any request to be trained up to do other work in your office or a request to come out of the callers office. As it will go against their latest crappy agreement under the "Doing other work in your office" section.

dvbuk - We have 1 person that covers our day off, she hates it in the 'room of doom' as she calls it.

rogerrabbit - totally agree with you, a specialised job should receive the wage it is entitled too, but I doubt the union would be bothered by a few hundred of us that do callers duty.

The "specialised" element was done away with under the uni grade agreement. On a re-pick there would however be a "specialist" tag applied to candidates - if there were any. I don't suppose you could con someone into believing it's a doddle and get a swap that way.

None of the posties would work up there, they all know what its like. My colleague who works the other shift to me has said she will put in for a move if I leave the duty, just a bit more pressure......I must admit everything runs relatively smoothly when its us 2 running the place. When I applied for the callers duty I did have to have another interview to see if I was suitable.

They should do. I would never work in the callers office, never. I'm pretty sure the glass partition is actually for the irate customer's protection. You really do have my sympathy and with RM's attempts to run the service down even further it's only going to get worse.
