Armed Robbery Goes Postal in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) â€” Masked gunmen robbed a mail processing center in western Sweden on Tuesday, leaving metal spikes, burning cars and suspected explosives in their wake to avoid pursuit, police said. Three men were later arrested.

No one was injured in the heist in Goteborg, but parts of the city were sealed off as police investigated the suspicious devices, causing traffic chaos and forcing about 120 people from their homes, police said. Restrictions were lifted after bomb squads disposed of the suspected bombs.

Police spokesman Stefan Gustafsson said the devices were not "live" explosives, but declined to give more details.

Several masked men armed with rifles had entered the mail processing center around 1 a.m. and ordered employees inside to lie on the floor, said another police spokesman, Thomas Fuxborg.

Fuxborg said burned out cars and suspicious devices were strategically placed outside police stations and other locations to delay the police response. Caltrops â€” weapons made up of several metal spikes â€” were also scattered on roads.

"This is a planned tactic to prevent police from going to the scene," he said. "This has been very well planned."

The elaborate distraction, however, may have failed. Gustafsson said three men aged 25, 31 and 40 were brought in for questioning and arrested on suspicion of being involved with the robbery.

Former Vice President Al Gore arrived later in the day in Goteborg, Sweden's second largest city, to receive an environment prize, although his trip was not affected by the robbery.

I doubt there would be anything of much value in our place apart from 3 plasma screens.

We have two in our DO......if i saw masked raiders demanding valuables, I'd toddle off for a screwdriver to get the screens down, then tell them "That's your lot! If you want cash and valuables, your at the wrong place - try 148 Old Street, London"
