No matter what magic formula or software management used, it will never make sure all our workload are equal. It is impossible. I think it is time for reserve postman to do something with this software rather than managers.

Pegasus

Post by coppertop »

The main problem with Pegasus is that the speed of the postie is set at 6km and he dose not slow down for blocks of flats or allow for fatigue yet all of these can be accounted for in the programe so you can now all know we are being taken for a ride. In our office where it has alresdy been put in on most of the deliveries it has caused massive cut off's some people have only completed the round once that is in three months the rest of the time they have cut off. If you do the job by the book Pegasus deliveries are not do-able

It was so successful that in my section it took out 3 walks and now they are putting 1 and half back in, apparently its the same for a all 4 other sections in my DO as well (talk was 13 taken out and 8 put back in).

If that's a sign of success I wonder if Nick Leeson will be the Government appointed head of Northern Rock when its nationalised on Monday.

See it obviously does not work so why oh why...

Sorry i brought it up it seems it has only brought misery to the offices that have implemented it, but thanks for all your advice i will have a little more understanding when they tell me to just carry on my shift when i arrive back to the office at 0455 hrs in the morning.

One thing I remember from my school days was that the average walking speed of an average male was 4 mph. Now I know Nike have done wonders with their new trainers, but come on RM! To set the walking speed at anything from 4.5 to 6 mph is ludicrous. You will be rushing round faster than the average speed carrying bags of mail, stopping to DELIVER it (have RM forgotten about that part of our job) According to my union rep and H&S rep a few years ago the speed that RM said we should walk at was 100 steps per minute. This rate was obviously dependent on the environment, steps, steepness of hills, weather conditions etc. I was under the impression that RM had devised this rate over many years.

Oh and the idea of sprinting round my delivery at 6 mph, in the rain wearing my new Magnum boots, get real, I'll spent more time in A&E than at work!

Is the speed MPH or KPH because that makes a big difference.

THE TIME LIMITS..

Post by L Tommo »

Now RM and there ideas.. ALL come to nothing in the end and sense prevails IF posties just stick to the agreed H&S measures and not the crap they chuck at us... 6mph walkng as an average is a joke we all know... Wot about the slippery walkways and gates that stick or dont work... ? RM just put the pressure on to make us worry and stop us doing the job as it should be done.

5 hours? may I ask what time do you finish? After your allotted time span surely.
Yes and it gets very wearing as i have a home and family and a husband and surprise surprise they do like to see me.The good thing is ad im trying to be positive here is i only get to eat once aday so ive lost weight, not that i needed to loose to much anyway.

Look forward to Gio-route implementation then. We had it done early last year and yes there are problems which you should look out for. I will list them. But on ours the really big walks actually came out of it better with some being taken off them. Also it works very well in high density housing areas like council estates but the problems we found were as follow:

1. Does not recognise rear/side door access - it thinks every address you go to the front door.
2. It cannot tell what the terrain is like. My delivery (which I do my own way) started at the bottom of a very steep hill.
3. It cannot cope with low density "posh/middle class" housing areas, especially those with long winding drives. Some of our walks it said 3hrs 20 mins and it actually takes 4.5hrs. They are now changing them as it was costing them a fortune in docket.
4. It tries to bet you do back the craziest roads. One of our walks came out with postie zig zagging down a major A road.
5. It takes no account of the workload - ie affluent areas are treated as though they have the same call rate and weights as less affluent areas.
6. Biggest thing to watch out for is make sure that the walking speed and call rates are adjusted for local conditions. Both of these parameters can be set as required but to get a fair balance you will need the Union rep and Management to come to an understanding. Also try to get the walk time set at 3.20 as this will give some flexibility for rearranging the walks. IE is there any point in 2 posties going down 1 small road just because Gio-route was worked out at exactaly 3.30.
Thanks for the warning as i have alot of round the corner up the yard to the front door,i can see alot of us having some problems here.

We used pegasus along with another London office(SE9)about 7 years to plot a revision based on the way forward if i remember rightly, and what fun we had :nana .After about 3 years and feck knows how much money no agreement was ever reached :d'oh! and i think thats when the strikes kicked off and SDD came about. As some of you guys said it is vital all A-Plus in your office is up to date and the call rate is as high as possible(i think we got 95%) and the walking speed is as slow as possible as this will decide the amount of walks it throws out :whistle .What we gained at our office-5 new mini bus type vans and about 80 pouch boxes around the area after 3 years of revision work :Very Happy ,after that every office done table top revisions as far as i know :dance .
I spoke to my DOM today and asked him if he had heard of any plans to use pagasus again in South London,he did not think it would be the case :Very Happy .

I attended a regional briefing and I just had a quick flick though my notes, We were told that CWU HQ had put forward a walk speed of 2.6 Mph as apposed to RM's 4.0 Mph and a call rate of 92% as apposed to the 75% Rm wanted.

Can anyone that is involved in Pegasus/Geo confirm that agreement has been reached Nationally and that these figures are correct?

If I had a call rate of 75% every day, I'd be over the bloody moon - as it is RM are the ones on a different planet!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Weve had Pegesus induced walks at the Rugby League capital of the world for some months now.Management promised it would equalise walks however the evidence tells a different story.Pegesus takes no account of mail volumes so that a walk that may get two coded boxes is assumed to be the equal of one that gets four. Also it assumes that a bag is ready for you at a particular point on the delivery when we all know its not the case. All in all in my opinion a complete waste of time and money.God knows how much money weve wasted at my particular office since it was merged in 1998.Pre merger we had one manager and four vans now we have 5 managers and 50 vans and the managers change more times than Newcastle United. Each brings his own views and ideas that ultimately cost thousands and offer no improvement to working conditions or quality of service to the public.

Pegasus was never designed as a tool for royal mail it was a canadian bin bag delivery system !! it will not work. Most offices are not equiped to even think it out properly figures fed in by inept managers and there stooges. It will never work you must all remember the managers bonus woks on cuts so the input will be swayed in there favour and bollo* to the posties.

just do your job properly and tell them to stuff flexibility right up there ar*es then and only then will they realise that we cannot do any more :nana :nana
