I dont think mail is down, how much we get for doing the same amount of mail as last year is down though!!! We get 13p for a DSA item instead of the old mailsort price which was about 20p i think???( Cant remember of the top pf my head) Anyway the point is that an identical mail bag this year is worth considerably less than last year because of DSA, simple as that. More and more and even more huge companies are switching to DSA weekly, Rm needs an alternative to compete with it and get that business back!!! Tip for people who work in MC's , take any out of area DSA to your revenue protection unit, DO NOT SIMPLY SORT IT, the carrier in question needs to pay a mis-sort fee for it, not everyone knows this and simply sorts the mail up if they come across the odd few.

RM want to lose about 20% of their total volume. This is an aim of the regulator. Until this achieved the UK makret will not be considered open. RM will probably lose more than this.

This point is made regardless of whether you like it or not. RM Wholesale for example are encouraging competitors to stay with DSA and not consider their own delivery network, and are also talking about offering agency agreements to help get round the VAT issue. This means that RM consider their own delivery staff to be the competitive advantage, whereas their processing part is expendable.

So are we saying then that MC's are going to get hit hard,i know they want to close down a few.

It is viewed that there are still way too many mail centres in the wrong place, and not of the right size for modern day machinery and transportation routes. This is just classic modernisation and we have seen this trend throughout the industrial age.

As for mail going up or down, there is the slight possibility that mail volumes will increase now that the big customers see it as being cheaper. I haven't seen evidence of this yet. Again I think if competitors and RM bring new products to the market place that gets the customer excited then it could bring a new dawn for increased mail volumes, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a while yet.

Yesterday postcomm announced plans for 'relaxing' the 4 main conditions for anyone wanting a license to carry mail, basically means anyone at all is gonna be able to pick a license up now :no no (doing me homework more now lads, opening my eyes to whats going on instead of turning up and mp3-ing it til hometime haha)

Even if they relax the rules for gaining a licence it will still be the main players.

1. They will be able to under-cut new companies
2. Even if any of them became successful they will be bought by investment funds or bought by one of the big players.

3. Their offerings will be small in volume, without having considerable money behind them to invest in sorting machinery & transportation networks. On top of the that they would need to implement sophisticated tracking IT systems, which again costs lots of money up front.

The only impact might be with individual companies getting licences, which will help get round the VAT issue, and also allow them to access RM without going directly to a competitor. Some of the big retail organisations such as TESCO might be interested in getting their own licence.

That could be a good cash cow for RM, so why aren't they looking at it.? They could charge them something between DSA price and what DHL, TNT and the rest would charge them.

re: Not quite like that

Maybe I was suggesting that this will help RM. No!

1. Competitor performance on access in RM inward is 99%+
2. These companies are only obtaining their own licences so as to help get round the VAT issue.

All I'm saying at the moment is that for a non-postal company to get a licence is a hassle and a pain as it is not their specialism.

I just checked the Postcomm website and can't find any businesses with licences (I thought there were).

Also don't be surprised if there is some collaboration between competitors and companies to offer an alternative mails network at some stage in the near to medium future. This is where complimentary partners come together for their own benefit. YOu'll be surprised about some of the bed-fellows out there!

What I can't understand, disregarding whether the mail is up or down on last year is, RM has been doing this for 350 years. Why haven't they manged to equalise the flow of mail each day? Surely they must have that much mail that they can forecast flows & manage accordingly, so you don'thave a light day then an absolute bastard of a heavy day. Maybe I don't know all the ins & outs but would appreciate any explanation/theory.
