Strange Decision by the Sheriff ?
A POSTMAN was fired from his job after almost eight years when it was discovered he was hoarding mail and failing to deliver it in the run- up to Christmas 2006.
Mark McLintock, 28, of Hillcrest Avenue, Glenburn, ended up in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court where he admitted that while employed as a postal operator at Container Parks, Abercorn Street, Paisley, on December 18, 2006, he intentionally delayed mail during its transition by post, failed to deliver mail and kept it.
Defence agent Philip Roney stressed that his client had not acted with any criminal intent or held on to other people’s mail for any potential gain.
He had, said the lawyer, been under strain at the time and most of the envelopes discovered fell into the junk mail category.
Now a sheriff has ordered McLintock to find work within the next four weeks.
Depute fiscal John Miller told the court that a Royal Mail officer investigating a separate matter relating a Trade Descriptions Act enquiry, had cause to examine a container in which was discovered a mail bag containing 39 undelivered packets.
Postmarks revealed they had been retained on various dates.
When quizzed, McLintock said he had been under stress at the time.
He was then dismissed after serving almost eight years in the job.
Mr Rooney stressed that none of the mail in question had been tampered with by the accused.
He was, he said, actively attempting to find alternative employment.
Sheriff David Pender deferred sentence for four weeks, telling the accused: “During that time, I expect you to find employment so that this can be dealt with by a financial penalty.â€
