It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I've googled him and not much about apart from a few HQ bits.
Someone will be on later when his comp is ok and no doubt give us the run down.

I heard Ward speak at a meeting this week and was not impressed at all.

He appears to think that all the changes RM are bringing in are inevitable and did not have any resistance or fight at all, only hoped to achieve compromise through meetings with RM and lobbying the government.

So we should all just roll over and die then?

I heard Dave recently too and came away with the opposite opinion. He is not running from change he is attempting to push the union into the forcefront of it all.

My opinion ( and i will elaborate when i have time) is that another bitter national election is the last thing this union and more importantly its members need. I repeat my earlier opinions that our failings during the recent dispute were political and that is the role of the General Secretary. The role of the DGS(P) is to lead us industrially and Dave led 130,000 postal workers on 8 days IA in a very anti-union climate.

I think a clear even handed look at the situation leaves Ward as the best candidate by some distance. Substance over style would be my call. I'm sure we'll hear a lot more of this over the coming weeks and months.

I wouldn't expect anyone who experienced the cack handed negotiations and the underhanded way the agreement was foisted on the membership to be even remotely likely to vote for Dave Ward. I don't know Pullinger and I would hope there would be more than two candidates but even if it was M Mouse and Ward you can guess who would get my vote. IMO Ward is far too parochial and political for my liking. So let's have a new broom.

As a personal opinion I think Dave Ward came across as OK when he was on his own.

One of his biggest mistakes during the IA was letting Billy take over the PR side. Dave came across as knowing the subjects and issues he was talking about and seemed to understand our point of view. He had a pretty good TV style. However, Billy came across as bumbling and unsure of what he was saying, in one interview when he was asked 1 question, he answered it with the same answer he had given to a previous question, also Billy comes across as way too political for me.

The other mistake was when he was filmed coming out of the negotiations - near the end I think, having a laugh and joke with these 2 :lfo :cfo

Therefore I will try to find out as much as I can about Terry Pullinger before I make my mind up whether to support Dave Ward.

Post Office workers to decide on strike
07-08-2006

Postal workers will this week vote to determine whether a mass walkout should be staged at three of the country's largest Royal Mail distribution centres in protest at new working practices.

More than 1,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at sorting offices in Essex, London, and Nottingham, are debating whether strike action is the best course of action after the Post Office introduced new policies designed to speed up the distribution of mail to large companies.

If the strike does get the go-ahead, the entire country's postal system could suffer as a result, but the Post Office has defended its new working practices by reiterating that no jobs had and would be lost as a result.

However, Terry Pullinger, assistant secretary at the CWU, accused the firm of "sheer blood mindedness" in its determination to make the changes despite their apparent lack of support among employees.

"The situation represents an outbreak of anger and frustration towards an employer who is using the challenges that our industry faces to avoid meaningful negotiations or consultation with the recognised trade union, and in doing so is failing to take on board the views and concerns of its employees," he said.

Mr Pullinger claimed that the Post Office was running the risk of sowing "distrust, suspicion and lack of mutual respect" if it continued with the new working practices.
