Mum Catriona Duke has criticised mail bosses after she received two strangers' post – including a benefits letter – inside her damaged catalogue.
Mrs Duke's ripped Danburymint gift brochure was delivered to her Sunderland home inside a plastic envelope with an apology from Royal Mail.
But inside its pages were two white handwritten envelopes – one addressed to the Benefits Agency in Blackpool and the other to Littlewoods, both with first-class stamps on them.
Mrs Duke, of Priestsfield Close, Chapelgarth, said: "I don't know about the Littlewoods one, but I would imagine the benefits envelope is full of personal information.
"What if it had gone to someone dishonest? I could quite easily open this, read it and put it back in a new envelope. It is appalling."
Fears of identity fraud were heightened after discs containing 25million people's personal details from HM Revenue and Customs, Washington.
Worried about the consequences of the misplaced letters, Mrs Duke, 43, rang Royal Mail to tell them what she had found inside her damaged catalogue.
Mrs Duke said: "They told me a first-class stamp did not guarantee delivery and that if you wanted it guaranteed you had to pay for special delivery.
"Well what are we all buying first- class stamps for? This is what infuriates me about the level of service we provide in this country."
Mrs Duke, who lives with her husband Paul and two children David, 12, and Amy, 15, said she was disappointed with the response from customer services.
She said they did not seem concerned, sorry about the mistake or grateful she had been so honest, and just asked her to pop the items in the post.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We apologise that Catriona Duke's catalogue was damaged in our system and that she received two other items of mail for different addresses by mistake.
"We can only assume it was a case of human error and have informed the local delivery office manager.
"Royal Mail handles over 21billion items of mail each year and all but a fraction of one per cent are delivered safely to the correct address."

Get a grip
These things happen from time to time, especially with the amount of xxxx we deliver.Person needs to get a life, get off benefits (probably is even though not her letter) and get a job.Maybe spend a day on my shift then she might appreciate the amount of work we do as a company.
Idiots like that really get on my nerves.

Did she call the Sunderland echo first? Probably. She had by Royal Mails admission, approx. a 23million to one chance of getting these letters in 1 year, so she should realise just how 'special' she is!
She must be perfect herself, and never make any mistakes. If she does I think "it's appalling!"
