RMCtv : Royal Mail pay better than Doris at Asda on checkout 3

Post by POSTMAN »

Previously on RMC and moving on from RMCtv : Why is our overtime rate lower than our hourly rate?

Head of compensation

Hi, everyone, my name is ### ######, and I'm the head of compensation at Royal Mail group. I know Simon is frequently asked as am I,
how does our frontline pay compared to our competitors and other companies? And the answer is good news. So let me explain.

Let's start with basic pay including any functional supplements for our Posties, at our current hourly rate and a 37 hour working week. Our full time salary in delivery is 25,272 and 24,423. In processing.

This is comparable with the entry level of salary of a teacher or nurse and around 25,000.

So we break that down into a national hourly rate we pay 12 pounds 66 per hour in processing compared with Amazon and Hermes, who will pay between 10 pound 10 and 10 pound 40 an hour on a 40 hour week Yodel rate sits below these.

For delivery often our direct competitors don't operate the same model. And their deliveries can be taken by owner drivers on a pay per parcel or day rate approach.

So it's much harder to make an apples with apples comparison.

Instead, it's probably more helpful to look at a sector who does have customer delivery roles such as retail, and the likes of Asda, Iceland and Ocado.

Their hourly rates vary from nine pounds 36 to 10 pound an hour on a range of 37 to 40 hours a week.

So the headline is Royal Mail pays considerably above our competitors for our postie roles on the basic hourly rate, which is fantastic news.

But that's not all. On top of this. We also have job relocation base allowances, shift payments, bonuses, good sick pay, and our generous pension scheme.

You'll be aware that we're busy implementing the new collective pension plan, which we've designed with the CWU collective pensions are new to the UK and ours will be the first it's been specifically designed for people to provide a wage and retirement and a lump sum and Royal Mail will contribute 13.6 of pensionable pay to this.

I hope that's given you an understanding of where we sit within the market and against our competitors.

Why are they comparing RM with all the others???? We deliver LETTERS and PARCELS, it's not the same job, so we deserve more. - £15-20 per hour now needs to be on the cards.

Mr Thompson will be paid about 20% less than Mr Back, with a base salary of £525,000 and a pension allowance of 13.6%.

He will also be eligible to participate in the firm's short-term and long-term incentive plans, taking his total annual remuneration to around £1.4m.

That's when he joined but obvs we've being doing well so he's had his share in the success.

What's Slymons rate compared to bosses of the other companies ?
On the basis that he's on half a million a year, then around £266 pounds per hour!

Also interesting that he said that 50% automation was part of last years pay deal, and we are not there yet.
To me it was like you cheeky feckers asking for a pay rise you still owe the RM from last year.

A mate of mine delivers for Acado, admittedly a little bit less an hour than an us but the most drops he does in a shift is 20 to 25 on a bad day. So not really comparable in my opinion.

Sounds like the posturing has begun. Who knew there was a “Head of Compensation” though?

My son worked for Ocado deliveries, he had the time of his life.
He would regularly go from SE Lon to Hastings for a drop off.
Maybe we 'should' use their model!

It absolutely baffles me that we are compared to the likes of grocery deliveries and even parcel couriers.

Non of them have to shift tonnes of door to doors, letters, magazines. Some do parcels too but number of our scannable items + usual larger parcels can easily equate to the average number of drops a courier does, yet our delivery spans are much shorter than theirs and this is adding extra pressure to complete within allocated time. Don't even get me started about the fleet we drive. It is a shame. Van falling apart, not fit for purpose, often way too small to accommodate 2duties + parcels.

We probably work the hardest amongst all of our "competitors"
