Maybe been in the pipeline a while, probably brought forward by the 'brownies' incident. :angel

I know it's probably a generation thing, youngsters seem to treat these kind of things as "Recreational". It's never crossed my mind to indulge so they can test me until their heart's content. Worst they'll find is Brufen & Paracetamol ! :cuppa

Royal mail would lose 50% of their workforce. They're barely maintaining that...

Out of interest, what IS the policy on drink/drugs?

Some companies it's zero tolerance and you are out the door.
Others will offer support and a deadline to sort out any issues.

Very likely it'll be zero tolerance

There are two or three who work at our office who will be very worried if alcohol testing comes in, some mornings I feel like I could get pissed by breathing in their breath.

According to some US studies, post accident drug testing of persons involved in fatal and non fatal accidents, have shown that 40% had detectable traces of of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (the chemical in canabis that creates the high). The paper does go on to say that due to the time delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol stays in the body (weeks to months) after being used, it is often unclear as to whether the person was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

I cant see RM re-inventing the wheel here, and so looking at other industries its likley to be something along the lines of;

1) You sign a declaration at the start of your employment that you are not a user of illegal substances and agree to pre-employment screening/testing as part of your pre employmnet checks. Obviously if you take prescription medication these would be declared and permitted.

2) A for cause testing policy - e.g. post workplace accident, vehicle collision, aberrant behaviour etc. - So in the example above if the DOM could detect Alcohol first thing in the morning that may give rise to for cause under the aberrant behaviour clause.

3) Acceptance that as an employee of RM you may be asked at any time without prior notice, to undertake a drug/alcohol test as part of the ongoing random testing process.

However this is all speculation until a draft policy is issued to the union for comment.

RM Business Standards:
Behaviour

Behaviour which damages service to customers, or the
reputation or efficiency of the company, is unacceptable,
including lateness, poor attendance, dishonesty,
drunkenness, use of illegal substances, and violent or
disorderly behaviour or abusive language.
Doesn't say what they do about it though......

Seemed utterly moronic when I worked at Amazon to see people booted out for failing a drugs test. They were willing to work rather than mug some granny for a fix. :arrrghhh

But from a management perspective they are deemed "high risk" and as a company they dont want to carry that risk, so eliminate it. Been this way in Rail and Air travel for decades.

As we sit here now you are not allowed to 'drug and drive' it's illegal.
So it would have to be a blanket ban as opposed to just drivers I suppose.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
